YMCA employee arrested for theft
Diana Mokler, aquatics director and swim team coach at the YMCA as well as Maysville-Mason County Rec Park pool manager, has been arrested.
Mrs. Mokler previously operated the coffee shop in the K-mart Shopping Center before it closed a couple of years ago.
Maysville Police Detective Ken Fuller said Mokler has served time in Washington state on similar charges prior to her employment at the Maysville YMCA.

what type of theft? just goes to show no matter who you are or what type of work you do if your breaking the law you eventually get caught. this lady has worked with our children at the ymca and washington pool. i thought criminal background checks would be mandatory when you work closley with children. was this overlooked i wonder? since she has similar charges from washington state. this is not a good example for our children she has worked with. this is just my opinion.

I don't understand why a background check apparently wasn't done before she was hired. Anyone working with children should have one done. On the other hand, and I'm not making light of the fact that she has a record, but at least it was theft and not child molestation.

You would think that with as much as the YMCA charges they could afford a background check.

What were the theft charges exactly? Was she stealing from the Y? Anyone know? I heard... I repeat.. I heard.. that the coffee shop was shut down due to some "illegal" activity.... any connection?

After reading the article in Wednesday's Ledger it was for theft by unlawful taking over $300 and they did do a background check but nothing was reported. So my guess from what I read was that yes she was stealing from the Y.

25K Bond... must be pretty serious...
"Fuller said while Mokler was in charge of the pool and employed at the YMCA, it appears she failed to make deposits into the correct accounts, instead retaining those funds. A total figure for how much Mokler allegedly stole is not available yet, as the investigation is ongoing."

The article in the Ledger also states that the YMCA was checking with the company that does their background checks to see why this stuff in Washington did not appear on hers. They are looking into that and in my opinion if I was the higher ups in the Y I'd be checking my other employees this company did the background checks to make sure nothing was missed.

I agree with everyone on here...Why wasn't there a background check..especially when anyone is working with or around children...COME ON PEOPLE... I wouldn't want someone with a criminal background working with my children..or could she use her criminal background if checked for discrimination if not hired? Just a thought.

There was a background check done. If you'd read Ponto's source you'd have seen that.

From what I was told a while back by a small business owner is that when you do a background check on a potential employee, former employers are not allowed to give out details about why a person is no longer employed with them.
I think that if a person who employ in caught stealing and you don't persue it in court then they are "innocent until proven guilty" so you can't tell someone that they stole from you or then it is slander.
You know a lot of companies will ask the employee to quit or resign and pay the money back in exchange for not being prosecuted.
I could be wrong here. It would be interesting to know if this is true.
The reason why I say this is because I know of a person here in town who has been rumored to have been fired from several jobs over taking money, but she always lands another job. When I asked a small business owner I know how she keeps getting new jobs....that was the explaination I got.

There are two kinds of background checks in the childcare industry…State and Federal.
A Federal is mandatory on an Owner/Director…but a State is only required on employees (cheaper). I do Federal on everyone along with a CAN (child abuse/neglect) Report. I even do them on my volunteers…..I also don’t allow anyone in my daycare that doesn’t have to be there…these kids are MY responsibility and I treat them as my own….you can never be to careful these days……so why in the world would you want to save a few bucks and end up with someone like that…..also if I ever heard an employee scream at my daycare kids or jerked them around…I would fire them on the spot….not let them finish out the day to cover ratio….bigger is not always better….

You are pretty much right. It's almost impossible to get ANYTHING out of former employers any more. Companies are afraid of lawsuits. Most background checks are sketchy at best. Sometimes you can spot periods of unemployment, etc that might be a clue but most of the time they are wworthless.
