Mendon vets' suspicion led to 22-state alert; several dogs die
Donna Jackel
Staff writer
(December 22, 2005) — Two local veterinarians who suspected that dogs were dying from tainted food quickly alerted Cornell University and other veterinarians, helping to prompt a 22-state alert by the dog food company.
Late last week, Stuart Gluckman and Sara Sanders of Mendon Village Animal Hospital treated several dogs with liver problems. All of the dogs had been eating the same dry dog food, manufactured by Diamond Pet Food's Gaston, S.C., facility.

Sorry for the delay, the holidays are really slowing me down. But I wasn't sure either. I never heard of Diamond pet foods myself, but thanks to 'Outtadodge' for helping us out. Has anyone heard of this brand before? I suspect it's one of those gas station stores you see that has 50# bags. All I ever fed my pets is Iams, Science Diet, or Purina myself.

The brand is 'Diamond', and we do sell it locally. It is sold at Tractor Supply and Southern States. I feed this particular brand to my pup. The bags we have here locally are not included in the tainted food.

Watch out for these brands... IAMS...EUKANUBA...SCIENCE DIET
They are brands that test ON animals. Meaning that for instance if the bag says "Great bone regenerator" it is because in the labs, they have purposely broken a live dog’s leg and feed it different brands of dog food including theirs, and theirs healed the untreated broken bone better.
Here is the article on IAMS: “Iams' Own Exec Criticizes Company's Cruel Caging Policy” http://www.iamscruelty.com/
I know this is all true, because I had to write a report last semester and had to do TONS of research on it.
Here is a quote and the link for another site I found…
"A student at the University of Illinois wrote to me expressing her concerns about nine dogs at one of the school's labs. Over the years, I'd heard of such laboratories using animals--primarily rats and mice--for research on human disease. This letter described a different scenario. These dogs were being used for experiments funded by a well-known mainstream pet food company. When the student questioned the purpose of the experimentation, the head researcher, an animal science professor, explained that he undertakes this research "because pet owners want dogs who defecate infrequently."

Also….
You can read the label on the bags. If the bag says something like "meets the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO" it is NOT tested on animals, and I will buy it. However if it says something like tested UNDER the guidelines of the AAFCO then it is tested on animals.
Brand name is not always better either. Read labels. Just like human consumption foods the first item on the list of ingredients is what it contains the most of. For instance, Ol' Roy Gourmet Balance is similar too Beneful, but it more nutritionally better. Read the labels.

Anon:
I don't speak for all the mods, but I'll allow this, of course the ultimate say goes to Chuck. This is deeply disturbing to me, and it's good (to me at least) that the idea is out now, and I will investigate this. I hope Snowtiger, and others will give this a run too.
Right now, Schyner (my dal) is on Purina 1, since she gets tired of the same old, so I run the gauntlent, but for now, she'll be on Purina brand until I check this out.
Thanks.

Just so you know this is from the side of a Purina Beneful Dog food bag...
"Animal feeding tests using Association of American Feed Control Officals (AAFCO) procedures substantiate that (c) Purina Beneful Formula provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintaince of adult dogs."
If it says "feeding tests using" or anything to that affect than they are using animals to test the food on.
Just as I stated in my earlier post.
Purina DOES use animal testing. As does Iams, Eukanuba, Maxxium (i think that is the name of it) just read lables.
They do NOT test if the bag says something (dog food name) is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages"
I used to have a bad impression of Ol' Roy, a Wal-Mart brand, however they have really stepped up to the plate lately. Comparing the nutritional content of their version of "Beneful" which they call "Ol' Roy Gourmet Balance" they are almost identical. Beneful DOES test on animals, Ol' Roy does not.
Hope this helps to open eyes. The more we buy from companies that allow this treatment, the more they will continue to make it.
I have a bumber sticker that says: "Eukanuba: We won't buy while cats and dogs die"
And I stick to it.

Grr...companies do everything to shaft us, don't they? Ok, Schyner just ran out of Purina 1, and I have to buy new food for her today. Looks like O'Roy will be coming visiting now. I'll be sure to read up on the lables now, AC. Thanks for the heads up. I have a deep cycism with companies. First it was with China, who skin cats and dogs to make cheap fur and mislabel it. That's when I decided to stop buying all China based products *period.*
Now it seems, I need to boycott pet foods.
What's next? I better not ask, it seems.
