Sure, snails are slow to begin with. However, early findings from research conducted at the University of Calgary show high concentrations of MSG inhibit and actually stunt the growth of snail brain cells. Monosodium glutamate, or MSG as it's commonly known, is a food additive often used to enhance flavour.

This was in a friend's Livejournal I have another friend who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, and he's confirmed that MSG is a major problem for him. Be careful folks.

OK, I'll point out the obvious. I'm sure the researchers know what they're doing, but MSG is a kind of salt. You ever see what happens when you pour salt on a snail? :fear:

MSG is a big ingredient in Chinese food......they've been trying to dumb us down for years. I'm guessing they don't use it in China on their food, just here in the states. Maybe they thought it had worked and we wouldn't be smart enoough tof figure out the lead on the toys or the poison in the dog food.

Foxy: Have you ever read what is in the things they push to kids today? Lunchables for example, are as unhealthy as a Krispy Kreme donut. The amount of carbs, salt, and fat is incredible.

Doesn't take that long to make a healthy lunch for a kid, what 5 minutes to chop of veggies? Put an apple in a bag?

MSG is also a culprit for those of us who suffer from migraine headaches. There is one Chinese restaurant here in Maysville that I cannot eat at because I always end up with a migraine. I never could figure out why until I ate at the one in Flemingsburg a couple of times & saw a sign in their window that said "No MSG added." That's when I figured out where my headaches were coming from.

It is also a major culprit for IBS sufferers. I try to avoid it at all cost along with margarine and vegetable oils. By eliminating MSG, switching to butter and olive oil, I have seen some improvement. Most of the time I just avoid eating out.

The following Fast Food menu items contain MSG or enough free glutamate to cause a reaction:

McDonald's®
Grilled Chicken Filet
Hot and Spicy Chicken Patty
Grilled Chicken Ceasar Salad
Grilled Chicken California Cobb Salad
Seasoned Beef
Sausage Scrambled Egg Mix, Sausage, and Sausage Patty
French Fries - the "seasoning" added to the oil the fries are precooked in.

The "seasoning" is made from beef, wheat and milk, processed to break down the proteins into free amino acids like glutamate. US laws allow "natural flavoring" to consist of "protein hydrolysates" containing free glutamic acid. That's why they do it - to free glutamate to act like MSG so they can declare a "clean label" while misleading the consumer.

You hit that on the head. MSG, (a Salt based product) kills snails on contact. I am sure even in the smallest amounts it would damage or slow a snails brain growth.

Now I am not standing up for MSG. MSG is bad and has many adverse side effects. I am only pointing out this sounds like a stupid way to test the effects of MSG on humans. A snails brain does not compare to that of a human.
