Judge: Girl's name, Talula Does The Hula, won't do.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

What's the big deal, just the government trying to control one more thing. As if that not have enought to worry about and can't get undercontrol! So much more important things to tend to then what someone wants to name their child. That's what nicknames are for! lol

Of course this is New Zealand that did this not here. I'm all for unusual and unique names but IMO Talula Does The Hula is pushing it. Nicknames work for a while but wait until this child has a sub teacher who is reading role from a list and just blurts it out. By process of elimination, the other kids would figure out whose name it is. I'm not saying it is the goverenments job or right to change things like this but parents should think before going to this extreme.

I got to agree that parents should take it into consideration. But the government should not have a right to take a kid away from its family and into their custody because of its name. Thats a bit much. But I got to admit I wouldent want the name Talula does the Hula either.

Was the name supposed to be Talula does the hula from Hawaii or were they from hawaii?

Parents should think twice before they give ridiculous names. However, what I find more troubling are parents that can't spell/and/or/read and tag a kid with stupid names that they pronounce differently. Two cases come to mind: one mother thought the doctor had already named the baby became it said female one the crib id. She put "Female" on the birth certificate and pronounced it to rhyme with Tamale but with a beginning F sound. The second case-the mother named the baby Orangeade and pronounced it Orangeadda. But then, there was the case of my great-grandfather whose parent I am assuming could both read and write. They named him Jasper Deratus and he in turn named my grandfather Ivard. Go figure---

A friend of mine taught at an inner city elementary school. Two new students were enrolled and taken on a tour of the school, along with their mother. The children's names? Sir Master and You Highness! The mother loudly demanded that school staff address her children by these names. Is there a point where an unusual name choice violates the rights of others?
Just asking for opinions...

I think the names are rediculous, and shouldn't be allowed. I think it terrible that someone would name their children something like that. But, how in the world do you draw the line?

That is child abuse in my opinion. What are parents teaching or trying to do to their children?
There is no way to regulate such stupidity without undermining every right we hold dear.

In Scandinavia there is a very long list of approved names, and children must be named from the list. Given what's going on in this country, maybe it's time we put together a list of our own.

I think I have the right to comment on this one, being that I do have an unusual name..LOL My name is Winter Shawndenie (pronounced shawnduhnay), and we have a lot of different names in the family.. many of them are Native American type names. Of course I was teased in school, and still am by some people, but I was always proud of my name. Most of the time people aren't teasing because they don't like my name, they just do it to be silly. I've had way more compliments on my name than negative comments. Although I would not name my kid Talula does the hula or whatever, but in some cultures those types of names are normal. There's quite a few people named Talula, and it's actually as pretty name. They should have just stuck with that, I guess. Just to give you an idea of some names in my family, here ya go:

Winter, Sci, Star (2 Star's actually), Starla, Tanika, Tehya (my daughter, pronounced Taya), Alma, Rosalin, Nels, Brooqelyn, McKenna, Braylen, Brayden, Kiana, Leeland, Autumn, Neena, Aliyah, Hunter, Jayden, Lani... and the list goes on...LOL Also there's quite a few of them with 2 middle names also... I decided not to do that with my kids though because it would seem confusing.
