Looking for information on harvesting ....

do you pick them? - do you just let them fall ?

We've got a giant tree just loaded with them and I've noticed 1 or 2 on the ground. I don't get enough info surfing the net so I figured there has to be an expert here !!!

Thanks !

The wind blew them off. They will fall and you can help (shake tree). After the first frost they will be ready.

..........in the fall, the Amish in Wallingford & a fellow in Mt Olivet will pay $12.00 per 100 lbs. It's a great way for the family to get together & fill up a truck bed & make a easy $100.00.

We usually do it every year usually in Sept/Oct.........see ya mark

Mrs. D., Yes, your walnuts will be ready after the first frost. If this is your first time dealing with walnuts and you plan to use them yourself, you must hull them. To do this, place your walnuts in your driveway and contiue to drive over them until they are hulled. If you touch the hulls, your hands will be stained. Old time furniture makers actually boiled the hulls to make walnut stain. After the walnuts are hulled they must be left out to dry out for a week or so. Do try to eat them when they are still wet. Black walnuts are fabulous in many desserts but they are terrible to shell.

I remember shelling walnuts when I was a kid. A lot of work but the nut inside was really good. My mom collects them every year for her fabulous desserts at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Bulldog gave you really good instructions just remember to wear gloves, I still get a little stained anyway but it will wear off.

If you use your drive way. The stain will stay on the drive way.
