Let's ban message boards. Now there's an idea!

Brian K Beckett
July 7th, 2008, 06:41 PM
Well Jimmy message boards and social sites have all had bans proposed against them. Some federal laws have even been implimented restricting/banning certain types of features such as chat by location. Those got started because a number of media reports about kids, wives and husbands leaving homes and going across country, and to find another mate. Social site such as my space have even become the targets of such bans/restrictions. Even BBS's such as this one has become targets for bans/restrictions.
Try to google everything that we have listed here to ban and you will find where every single one has been proposed or has actually been banned, even the loud people in public places that Bengals Mamma described.

Sometimes bans start out with good intentions but then they open the door for stupid things such as wearing clothes for example. Everyone knoews you cant run around naked but thats not good enough. Because we made it a law to wear clothes now people want to dictate what types of clothes you wear and how you wear them. Such as Hooded sweatshirts, baggy jeans, and underwear showing these have all been proposed and some are banned in the United States because of peoples opinion that only thugs wear clothes like that.

I have to agree with Mark to a certain degree. I don't want cell phones totally banned, just while driving. If it's so important, pull over and take or make the call. I was almost hit 3 times last week by people talking on their cell phones. Two of them didn't wait their turn at a three way stop, these were both adults and on different days of the week. The third was a teenager who made a right on red with traffic coming. You could tell she didn't have a clue about anything.

Turn them off in restaurants. They answer their phones and apparently the person calling is hard of hearing because the person that answers the phone talks loud enough for everyone to hear.

Turn them off in church. Yes we have a yahoo whose phone goes off during church. Oh! He even has made calls in church. If God doesn't take him out, I may.

Exiling the Happy Meal
Los Angeles Lawmakers Want to Escalate
The War on Obesity (And Fast Food)
By SARAH MCBRIDE
July 22, 2008; Page A14

Despite its health-crazy reputation, parts of Los Angeles are plagued by obesity rates that rival any city in America. Now, the city may join a growing roster of local governments aiming to put their residents on diets by cracking down on the fast-food industry.

In an effort to fight obesity, Los Angeles is proposing to ban fast food restaurants in one neighborhood, tapping into a tougher attitude toward fast food.
Jan Perry, a Los Angeles city-council member, is spearheading legislation that would ban new fast-food restaurants like McDonald's and KFC from opening in a 32-square-mile chunk of the city, including her district. The targeted area is already home to some 400 fast-food restaurants, she says, possibly contributing to high obesity rates there -- 30% of adults, compared with about 21% in the rest of the city. Nationally, 25.6% of adults are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ban cell phones while driving??? I have a cell phone to save time, not so I can sit on the side of a highway using one. If I had that kind of time, I would make my calls at home.

I read a number of charges in today's paper for "careless driving" anyone know exactly what that charge involves? Can people call in about your cell phone use and have you ticketed for careless driving?

Not for Cell Phone use generally. Careless driving is a step below Reckless driving. Say someone pulls out if front of you or I and we have to take evasive action to avoid hitting them. It's not really reckless but sure as heck careless. And they may have a cell phone up to their ear..

Your cell phone while driving privileges will soon be limited. I feel the state will pass a law requiring a head set while driving.

Understand one thing when a group of people get there way and get it into a vote WATCH OUT. I live in Cincinnati and the group of good doers calling themselves the Citizens for Community Values (not sure if that is the name) anyway they were able to write the ballets with that so many people were confused.
The way it was written on the ballot was if you answered yes it meant no and vice versa.
Maysville do not become Cincinnati all of our little local watering holes are going out of business and the chain reaction to that is incredible. We have bowling allys and mom and pop bars **** you cant even go to a Reds game and smoke a cig or a cigar (Doug Culp would crap if he went to a game now)

I for one could careless about the smoking I do smoke but sometimes it nice not going home smelling like a cig.......but once you let goverment or groups that support your goverment leaders start calling the shots WATCH OUT cause it doesnt stop with smoking it carries itself into such a tailspin no one reallly knows who is in charge the only thing you do know is that it is law.

Mark you may be on to something with the loosing of sleep. I have read about where studies have been done that show Americans are not getting enough sleep and that it has possible links to health problems. Remember when the smoking bans and the anti smoking campain started going good about 10 - 15 yrs ago? It was due to possible links to cancer and other health problems. Now despite the HUGE drop in people that smoke the numbers of the supposid health effects have actually increased slightly. The health nuts reason for this is because of Fast Food. So when they ban the fast food and the numbers only drop slighly or do not drop at all then maybe sleeping will become the next target.

Look people life causes death- living life causes sometimes quicker death. But what good is life if you are straped to a hospital bed in an oxygen tent with padded wals and an IV tube stuck in your arm. Yeah you might live a little longer but thats not living.

Oh yeah mark on the same link you posted I posted below your post about how sad it is that Communist Russian has more freedoms then America now does. Sad

In past years Maysville has supplied the local farmers market with plastic shopping bags, but this year the bags were not provided for area shoppers.

Maysville city regulations can also be used to pressure state lawmakers who are considering a bill to eliminate plastic bags across the state by 2012.

Several countries around the world have already adopted laws banning plastic bags, which often end up killing animals that swallow or get caught up in them.

If the ban saves just one wild animal or a person's pet, this ban would be a good thing.

Dictatorship refers to an autocratic form of absolute rule by leadership unrestricted by Law, consititution, or other social and political factors with in a State.

Democracy is a system of government by which political sovereignty is retained by the people and exercised directly by the citizens.

I believe that bans are enacted by leaders due to lazyness and the inability to forcast the consequences of thier actions. I believe we are banning ourselves into a Dictatorship. The very thing that we give our soldiers lives for to stop.

Ponto if you read most of the articles and look at who the authors of the articles are this becomes interesting. I looked at 4 pages and all of the were articles written by lawyers and journal writers. They allrefered to some study being done but none of them had a link to the actual study.

All though I am sure that accidents have occured due to someone yacking on a cell phone but I really wonder how big the risk actually is.

I have yacked on my cell while driving before and cant recall a near miss because of it, and I have often looked over at someone that was yacking on a cell phone and quietly criticized them for it as well even though they were driving just fine while doing it.

My uneducated conclusion on it is that some people can chat on a phone and drive just fine and some people cant do it. But the same can be said for driving skills in general, some people just drive better then others. I dont think I would advise driving while yacking on the phone but I dont know if i would support a ban on it either.

I am a busy person, but that is no exuse. Talking on the phone keeps me awake during long drives into the hypnotic afternoon sun. It also prevents my coworkers from hearing my private conversations. I agree that there are many careless and irresponsible drivers, but not all of them are on cell phones.
Some of them are eating, applying makeup, reading whatever they propped on the steering wheel, yelling at their kid(s), rummaging through their purse, etc., etc.

I was just witness to someone being fined just for talking on the cell phone within the city limits. That city has an ordinance, if the police see you on the phone while behind the wheel, unlessed parked, you are ticketed. This could be a good thing, but something hard to get used to.

I could agree to that.

But my question is that if cell phones do cause accidents is it because one hand is off the wheel and holding the phone or is it because they are concetrating on the conversation and not the road?

If its a concetration issue then a head set type restriction would not be effective but may be usefull in calming people who just dont like to see people talking while driving.

The funny thing to me about texting is that technoligy is supposed to make life easier or so one would think. But to have a conversation by texting as compaired to just dialing the nimber and talking it would seem to me that texting is not easier, or quicker.

This ordinance is redundant 3 fold. State law allows for the destructions of viscous animals, a city ordinance allows for the limiting of dangerous breed animals. I see no point in this action.

It is mostly all the complaining. Ban this and ban that! Either ban it or shut up about it. I do not agree with all the different bans. For example: the pit bull ban is not right to the dogs or the owners. Just because you have some stupid people that get a kick out of watching two animals tear each other apart. That is not the dogs fault it is the human that owns the dog. As far as a smoking ban that should be an individuals choice. At one time that was a way of life around here. Yes, if you own a pit (in city limits) as of Sept. 1 you get a first class ticket to, (unlawful citizen) and your dog can be legally executed.:banplease:

People living in the city limits should speak up against the pit bull ban not people who live outside the city limits.

I pay city taxes to work in the city, spend money in the city and live within 4 miles of limits. I have the right.

Either way, the law's already passed right? I mean, brass tacks bottom line, if you have one of these dogs inside the city on Sept 1, you could get in trouble. That sounds kind of sketchy to me. What's next, guns? Cigarrettes?

I will agree with you that people living in the city limits should speak up they are against it but I have had some people living in the city limits to contact me because they do not want to bring attention to them selves because they plan on keeping their dogs anyway.

In Italy:
Capri: Forbidden to wander off the beach in a bikini
Eraclea: Forbidden to build sand castles
Forte dei Marmi: Forbidden to mow the lawn on weekends
Eboli: Public displays of affection in a car can earn you a fine of up to 500 euros ($745)
Novara: groups of more than two people are forbidden from lounging around in parks at night.
Vicenza: fine of 50 euros for lying down in a park to read a book.

Emboldened by a nationwide crackdown on crime and a government decree giving them extra law-and-order powers, Italian mayors have issued a string of often bizarre by-laws to enhance "public decorum."

I bet if I tried I could find similar bans here in the U.S.

Let's ban people who call Maysville and Mason county residents "rednecks". Do you really think that smokers are preventing Maysville from moving into the 21st century? Maybe, Just maybe, some of us prefer the slower ways of previous centuries.

Hey Mark, A really good list. I expect you'll get banned from making lists next.

Well, just one small observation. If they restrict cell phone useage while driving, does that mean that police will be restricted too? I hear them on the scanner all the time saying call me on my cell. Would police departments get a deferral?
