Are the bobwhite birds on the rise? I haven't seen any in years and last year spotted a few on the farm. Spotted a few more this year. Still haven't heard that distinctive call of theirs. I used to love that call in the morning. I think they disappeared in the 70's. Anyone else notice a rise in population?

I keep thinking someone said the winter of '76-'77 killed them off. They are a cute bird. There's still not that many on the farm. Just a handful. Not like years ago. I'd love to stick a bird feeder back up. I just got tired of those birds pooping all over the deck. They would just line up on the handrail and wait their turn for the feeder.

At the Old Chenoweth Mound House on Hwy. 11 last week, I heard three of them calling back and forth to each other. Located the closest one on a fence post about 200 yards from me. This was about dusk. So tk, they are there, just listen very closely.
I used to love sitting on my grandfather's back patio at Lake Charles and listen to them. I believe there were alot more of them then than there are today. Brought back some good memories..........

Hey, Kim was cooking out and she whistled. They whistled back. Then you could hear them from two directions. Haven't heard that sound in years. I might have to start sitting on the deck when I'm done with hay. I love those sounds.

Good for you, tk! I'd forgotten that they would do that.

The Chenoweth farm? Is that one with the Indian mound out front? Name didn't ring a bell at first. If it is, that farm sits next to mine on the north side of me.

You got it, tk. I was one of the drivers while they were loading hay. The other bobwhites - one was in your direction, the other behind the Chenoweth house.
We also have a couple of them over here in Lewisburg. Don't hear them every evening, tho.

When Kim whistled, one was to the north. Sounded like it was on the other side of the shop. Probably in the field I haven't cut yet. You can hear that call from a long way off if it's still outside. So far, I haven't seen the Kill Deer running around the garden yet. Those birds are a blast to watch also. Especially when they drop that wing and act like they're hurt to get you away from the little ones.

I've heard some lately in Fleming Co. Usually in the evening on back of the farm. Haven't actually ID'd any but may have scared up a few cutting hay. Love to hear the call!

Out in Lewis county, there's bob-whites & killdeers. And the mourning doves, blue jays, cardinals, blue birds & something like a yellow finch but I'm not sure that's what they are. Birds abundance!!

We were at River Shores north of Hebron the other day for softball and saw a LOT of rabbits. Haven't seen many of them around here. What's happened to that population? Anybody know?

I'm going to guess the coyotes took care of the rabbits. They sure took care of the groundhogs. Those I don't miss at all. That and hawks. It used to be rare to see a hawk years ago. Now I see them all the time. I keep wondering if that's what got the snakes. I rarely see those anymore. But I've never seen a hawk with a snake. They'll grab a field mouse quick if they spot it.
