The 2008 Kentucky Emergency Management Area 8 class for ground search and rescue got more than they bargained for this weekend. The class covers several local counties including Mason County.

As part of the 3-day class held in Fleming County, a mock search was scheduled for Saturday Night at 9 pm., but as things go in the emergency rescue business, the call went out for a real missing person one night early. Friday evening the ground units and search dogs were called out for the real thing. A missing man was reported to area emergency personnel.

The search was successful, but for some members of the class, this didn’t allow for much sleep. Class resumed Saturday morning at 9 am and lasted for the next 17 straight hours. Ending Sunday morning at 2 am.

The extra long weekend concluded Sunday afternoon with 45 new State Certified members for ground search and rescue.

Five of the class graduates are members of the newly formed Buffalo Trace Mounted Patrol. By participating in the training the five county Buffalo Trace Area now has it’s first official Mounted Search and Rescue Team. They join the scuba, airborne, and ground units for future emergencies. As part of their continuing education, they will be taking first aid and CPR classes as well as advanced training for their horses.

Pictured are members of the Fleming County Emergency Management Team, the host of the SAR meeting, students and one of several search dogs.
