A widely used class of drugs for diabetes might ramp up the risk that patients will break a hip or suffer another debilitating bone fracture.
The study by Christian Meier of the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland and colleagues is in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine. The team studied 1,020 patients with diabetes who had suffered bone fractures between 1994 and 2005. The researchers compared the bone fracture patients with other patients who also had diabetes but did not break a bone during the study.

The team found that diabetes patients who were taking rosiglitazone (Avandia) or pioglitazone (Actos) had a two-to-threefold increased risk of breaking a hip, wrist or other body part. The risk of bone fractures appeared the highest in people who had been taking these drugs for two years or longer.

The authors say that the link between the drugs and the risk of bone fractures needs to be confirmed by additional research.
