FRIENDSHIP - The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification is currently evaluating skeletal human remains that were discovered last week in Shawnee State Forest, according to Scioto County officials. Captain David Hall, of the Scioto County Sheriff's Office, said that, as of Tuesday afternoon, the remains had not yet been positively identified.
A statement issued by the SCSO indicates local residents hunting mushrooms discovered bones that appeared to be human in a remote wooded area of Shawnee State Forest on Monday, April 8. The discovery was reportedly made in the southwestern Scioto County portion of the 63,767 acre forest, just off of O'Dell Creek Road near the small community of Friendship, which is seated along U.S. 52.
The mushroom hunters contacted a forest ranger, who placed a call to 911 at approximately 11:45 a.m. Law enforcement officials arriving on the scene concurred that the skeletal remains appeared human. Law enforcement officers with the SCSO, BCII, the State Forestry Division, and the Portsmouth Police Department then conducted a search of an area spanning more 500 square yards over several hours "for purposes of processing the scene and gathering additional evidence to assist in determining the circumstances," according to the SCSO.
The remains were turned over to the custody of BCII to review in hopes of identification and possibly to determine cause of death, according to SCSO.
Although the bones have not been definitely identified, there is reportedly some speculation that the remains could be those of a 21-year-old Portsmouth woman who disappeared while six-months-pregnant in August, 2007.
Anyone with information concerning the discovery is encouraged to contact Detective Denver Triggs of the SCSO at 740-355-8245.
