I don't know who's in charge of deciding what movies to show up at Carmike, but according to the schedule at carmike.com (http://www.carmike.com/showtimedetails.aspx?theatrenumber=074243&Day=Friday) for Friday, Leatherheads will not be opening here despite a red-carpet premiere down at the Opera House and the stars themselves showing up.

Someone screwed up.

Think of it from Carmike's point of view. They have a perfectly good movie theater already up and running, but they don't get the premier.

Instead, Leatherheads spend thousands of dollars to haul in the projection equipment and other items to spruce the opera house up. Also, all the work done on the downtown area would have been spent to clean up the Kmart parking lot.

If all of that effort and money had been spent on Maysville's only movie theater all the citizens would have benefited for a long time to come.

If you owned the theater wouldn't you feel a little slighted?

Not having been in the Opera House I wouldn't. Red-carpet is much better than sticky gum and cola soiled carpet. No offense to Carmike, love you guys too, but it's just a different caliber of event.

Now why they wouldn't want to take advantage of the regional hype over the movie is beyond me.

Besides, the Hill is busy all the time. It's nice that the events are held downtown.

Jeremy don't forget those old nasty curtains that have been there for years..

Fact is, if they feel slighted and refuse to premiere the flick, that's their stupidity. Money's money.. And that show will make money in Kentucky.. If they are using the Opera House premier as an excuse, more power to them... It's their money to lose..

It's probably a corporate thing where some central office somewhere else decides what movies to send out here. They may not have even been aware of the significance of that particular movie to this town. Most of the movies played there seem to be family films, kids films, and obvious block busters (with the occasional exception), in other words "sure things". Heck, every Clooney film would do well around here, but I think they passed on Syriana and Good Night and Good Luck too.

Then again, maybe the carmike.com site is just wrong and it may show up after all. Seems weird to have to drive down to Lexington to watch a movie that actually premiered here.

They better have my Indiana Jones when that comes out next month :)

well heck fire!! being a bit childish if ya ask me, sorry just typed what came to mind.
that movie would bring in extra $$$ for the theater....guess i will either spend my money to see Leatherheads in Mt. Sterling or wait til the DVD comes out

Speaking of Leatherheads I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to each of you who allowed me to use your photos and your Clooney event experiences as fodder for my article.

A while back I asked the manager of Carmike why another movie was not coming here... I was told that the reels cost X amount of dollars and they were not approved to spend that much on the reels. Therefore it was not going to be shown here. When I questioned him further, he said "Sure, we can up the price of admission and bring all the movies we want here, but what would the teenagers do? You know we are their babysitter." You know he is right... I would rather spend the couple of bucks then the $12 per person it costs in Lexington.
So it may not be what we assume, it may be economics... guess someone should ask....

Why do they even have a movie poster hanging up in there then if they aren't going to show it?

Maybe the drive-in at Paris will have it showing. They seem to get the new releases pretty often. I'd be willing to go and see it there if we get some nice weather for a change.

There's a good drive in over here in the Russelville/Decatur area. It has 2 screens, and shows 4 movies a night. It's called East Bend Drive-In. It's pretty cheap too, and they have some good homemade roasted hog bbq!

The one in Paris usually runs an ad in Ledger with the movies that are on for the weekend. I try and look in the paper tomorrow and see if they are running the movie. My 17 and 22 year olds love going to the drive-in.

According to Yahoo...

http://movies.yahoo.com/showtimes/showtimes.html?z=41056&date=20080404&nt=10

it's not at the Paris Bourbon Drive-In either. Currently they're showing the closest place as Hillsboro Ohio. That sucks. (Though Cincy and Lexington are probably closer)

i understand it will be here in about a month depending on how much money it makes or loses in the next 2 weeks--i quess if it doesnt do well the cost for those reels go down and then they can afford to show it at the discount cinemas

Is there any news about the DVD being available yet? I've been watching but haven't seen anything yet. Wanted to get one as soon as they were available.

Yes, it is showing at the Paris drive-in starting the 18th. Show time is 10:00. The first movie is Nim's Island at 8:15. It is also showing in Mt. Sterling.

http://movies.yahoo.com/showtimes/showtimes.html?z=41056&r=sim

it shows listings for theaters in the regional area. The Paris theater is called the "Bourbon Drive-In". Nim's Island is playing there along with Leatherheads this weekend.

For Carmike, I just go to their site:

No Leatherheads, still.

I underststand that they have to pick & choose movies in order to keep the prices low, but you think they would make an exception with this movie considering all that has gone on with it in Maysville. I think the cinema would make it's money back on what it would spend to get it. Of course I don't know exactly how much it costs the cinema to bring in these movies so I could be wrong.
