Does anyone know if we will be getting the locusts this year? I know Cincy had them a couple of years ago, but my father-in-law insists that our area gets them 2 years after Cincy.

There are two basic types of Cicadas (http://www.gardenersnet.com/atoz/cicada.htm):

Periodic, 2-8 year cycle- These insects "seem" to appear every year in some areas, because their life cycle is staggered. Actually, a different brood is hatching each year to make it seem like they are annual.

13 to 17 year cycle- This group does not appear every year. When they do emerge, it is in huge numbers. They are sometimes called "17 Year Locusts". Although, they are not related to locusts.

In the Bible, a swarm of locusts comprised the eighth plague in the story of the plagues of Egypt.

Proverbs 30:27 tells us that 'the locusts have no king, yet they go forth all of them by bands', including them as one of the four little wise things.

In the Book of Revelation, locusts with scorpion tails and human faces are to torment unbelievers for five months when the fifth trumpet sounds.

Distribution in Kentucky
I hope this helps. I found this info at: http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef446.asp The 13 and the 17 refer to the number of years in a cycle. So according to this chart, it looks like this is the year for the cicada.

Nine of the periodical cicada broods are known to inhabit Kentucky. Some are found in only a single county, while two are almost statewide.

Table 2. Emergence of Kentucky Periodic Cicada Broods through the Year 2017.
Year Brood Cycle (years) General Location
2002 XXIII 13 West of I-65
2003 IX 17 Possibly Pike Co.
2004 X 17 Statewide
2007 XIII 17 Possibly Scattered
2008 XIV 17 Statewide (except Purchase and possibly Pennyrile areas)
2011 XIX 13 Purchase, Pennyrile, and Green River areas
2012 I 17 Possibly Harlan, Letcher, Martin and Pike Co.
2016 V 17 Boyd, Greenup, and Lawrence Co.
