The Kentucky Equine Center (http://www.kyehc.org/adopt.html) strives to provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Kentucky's unwanted equines, regardless of breed.

To that end, they strive to educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis.

Also they work with and serve as a model for organizations with the same mission in other areas: to save America's equines from inhumane treatment.

As a result of their efforts, a Mason county farm has taken on the responsibility turning four very different mules into productive equine citizens.

Locust Creek Farm (http://www.locustcreekmules.com/) on the Flemingsburg Road and the Equine Center on Strodes Run Road have teamed up to care for and train four very different and unique equine hybrids into specially trained animals. Since the animals are starting from scratch, this training is expected to take up to two years.

In addition to good manners, and basic horsemanship, these four beauties will learn air scenting (http://www.airscentinghorse.com/). A relative new skill for horses and mules, normally used by dogs in a variety ways.

We have all heard about the skills of trained tracking dogs, but the difference and the reason to train horses is two fold. One, the horse samples air two, three or more feet off the ground. which in some cases is closer to the source of the target. This is enhanced by the horses far sighted abilities, even in tall grass.

The second reason is a horse can access a remote location with out alarming the criminal element.

Horses are famous for their ability to detect targets located far off in the distance. A large number of early settlers learned to give a horse free reign to seek out water while traveling in the old west.

As future candidates for the Volunteer Mounted Patrol, working with this new and exciting training will be shared with the riders and non rider volunteers in the All Volunteer Mounted Patrol (http://volunteermountedpatrol.bravehost.com/).
