Just read on yahoo news that a man went into the Notre Dame Academy in Portsmouth and shot his wife. No children were injured. This just sends chills down my spine, especially since its close to us.

Could this have been prevented, were there security measures in place already but failed. Hopefully our local school system will review measures and improve means to prevent this from happening here. Recently the murder of a higginsport man by 2 juveniles, that attended school, just makes me think how that could have been done at school toward others students, if they decided to.

God protect our children...

As far as security measure at the school.... I know St. Patrick has the doors locked during the school day and you have to ring a bell and someone will come to the door and let you in.

Since this was the husband of a teacher you have to wonder if he would have been denied entry even if there were security measures in place? If he concealled the weapon and made it seem he just needed to see his wife, I doubt he would have been denied enrty. I also wonder if the school was aware that there were domestic issues going on, or if the teacher did not make the school aware?

A similar situatuion happened years ago when a man pulled on to the DPL lot and shot and killed his wife and critically injured a guard. DPL management and office workers were aware that the husband was a threat because the wife had told them that he had threatened to kill her and a fellow employee. Even knowing that DPL failed to put any type of safety measures in place that could have prevented the shooting. So it makes me wonder what the situation was here and could this have been avoided?

This had to be traumatic for the children who were there. What a shame. I hope the teacher survives this.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Police say a man who shot and critically wounded a school teacher has been found dead in his home after a standoff.

The shooting happened shortly after 9 a.m. at Notre Dame Elementary School.

Police told the Portsmouth Daily Times that Michael Layne came to the school, shot and stabbed his wife, Christi Layne, in a classroom at the school, then left the campus.

One student said she and other students hid in a coatroom when Layne came in.

"We heard it all. We heard gunshots and we heard (Christi Layne) yelling," Emmaly Baker said. "(When we came out) she was really bloody and she wasn't talking."

Layne was airlifted to Southern Ohio Medical Center, then Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.V., where she is listed in critical condition.

Another person was stabbed in town before the shooting at the school, and Portsmouth police Capt. Rob Ware said police believe it was related to the shooting. He would not elaborate, but the Daily Times said the victim is believed to be Christi Layne's mother.

Police said they found Michael Layne barricaded in a home several blocks from the school with several weapons.

Kim Harris, who cares for a man who lives next door, said at one point police fired at the house after gunshots came from inside the home. Police "told us to get down on the floor and stay in the back of the house," she said.

Police said shortly after 12:30 p.m. that they had fired tear gas into the home and would likely make entry shortly. Just after 1:30 p.m., a SWAT unit entered the home through the front door, then came out a short time later without the suspect, but in a posture suggesting the danger was over.

Police said a few minutes later that Michael Layne was dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Portsmouth's police chief said they were never able to establish contact with Layne.

Parents, many with cell phones clutched to their ears, congregated in the parking lot across the street from the school. They began leaving with their children around 10:30 a.m., said Kathy Hall, office manager of Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

"I wasn't afraid for my own safety, I was afraid for the children, because these turn out so terrible, you know," Hall said.

The school and another Catholic school nearby were locked down, said Deacon Tom Berg, vice chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus.

"We are mobilizing our crisis team and sending them down," Berg said.

Public schools also were put on lockdown, said Superintendent Jan Broughton, who oversees the community's public schools.

About 160 children from preschool through sixth grade attend the three-story, yellow brick school, which has 15 teachers.
