Several area horsemen have expressed an interest forming an All-Volunteer Mounted Patrol Unit for the Buffalo Trace Area and a public meeting is planned for March 12Th. (see calender) (http://www.maysvillekybbs.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-3-12&c=1)

This group would include Bracken, Fleming, Lewis, Mason, and Robertson counties.

Volunteer Mounted Patrols are specially trained horses and riders (training can take 9-12 weeks) that can assist a community in areas of search and rescue, parades and security during events and fairs.

I remember last year during the Balloon Festival, one of the things we talked about on the BBS was how some people were crashing the party by walking through the large fields surrounding the event.

A Mounted Patrol Unit would have easily put an end to that without causing any damage or disrupting the event. They say one horse and rider can cover the same amount of terrain as 10 or more security guards on foot.

I think it would be pretty cool to have a well trained group like this in the area, so I have volunteered to help them out.

Maybe this year I can volunteer on a horse instead of working the road block behind the college. lol

If you want to help out or have questions, let me know.

I would think this would be a good thing. It would take some of the work of the officers who can't be everywhere at one time. Would have been an asset in keeping all those who cut through the field at the college instead of paying to get in like the rest of us did, I mean after all it was for a great cause and wasn't that expensive.

Do they provide the horse? What about health insurance? Pay?

I'm seriously interested in this. Not sure if I could but still. To be trained, paid, and to do good. Especially with a friendly horse - hey, got to have SOME benifits :)

KC, I know you and snow tiger like draft horses, here is a great video of a draft horse working as a mounted patrol horse.

The big cities like the larger horses, but for around here a slightly smaller horse makes a better all round choice when you have to search some of the area trails.

I think police mules are far more effective. Here's a picture of a police mule in action:

The caption reads "Ma'am, are there any drugs in the trunk?"

As events unfold, and the day grows closer for the local Mounted Patrol to become a visible organization in the community, one of the biggest events in the US is going to occur 60 miles down the road in Lexington.

The Lexington Mounted Unit will be hosting the 25th Annual National Mounted Police Colloquium at the Kentucky Horse Park in October 2008.

This event is open to any agency utilizing horses and will feature the first 100 horses and riders registered from various agencies all over the United States and Canada.

The Colloquium will consist of training classes on Tuesday and Wednesday conducted by instructors from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Toronto Police Service and will finish with a stringent competition on Thursday. The Thursday event is a sight to behold. The horses take out the bad guys...........

Local Sponsors are needed for this event to send our best rider to Lexington.

local information email is VolunteerMountedPatrol@Yahoo.com
and temporary web site (http://volunteermountedpatrol.bravehost.com/) is available.

Just for fun and a couple of laughs, check out the video link.

Some would say "size doesn't matter" Maybe I should have put this in the humor section.
