The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center is hosting the Cabaret Mechanical Theater in their new Temporary Gallery from November 10, 2007 through February 3, 2008. The exhibit contains 20 amazing, amusing mechanical sculptures that combine art and science. The sculptures, called automata, are brought to life by tiny cranks, pulleys and gears. Cabaret Mechanical Theatre celebrates the essence of tinkering with whimsy and humor.

In 1979, Sue Jackson opened a shop called Cabaret in Falmouth, a small town in the southwestern corner of England. She began displaying mechanical toys, or automata. Eventually she turned the shop into a gallery and renamed it Cabaret Mechanical Theatre. The gallery closed in 2000. Today the collection tours to museums around the world.

The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center received the exhibit from the Science Museum of Minnesota, and it is sure to please both kids and adults. The engaging and interactive exhibit contains a brief history of automata and then the fun begins. Visitors can crank the wheels and watch a goat in the bath or watch a donkey munch sweet corn among other sculptures.

Funding for the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre has been donated by an anonymous supporter. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 10 until 5 and from 10 until 4 on Saturday.
