.........mine would have to be "The Tonight Show" with Johny Carson. I'm talking about the era before Leno who doesn't even come close to following in Carson's shoes.
When it came to comedy & great interviews, Carson was "the man" ...... a classic on TV. I use to sit up & watch that show, knowing I had to get up early to go to school & still loved it.
Check out this classic skit I recently watched on youtube. Carson was having a great time making fun of one of my favorite Presidents.......Ronald Reagan.
Check it out:

Now that's classic TV!!
OK, what's your favorite TV show?
Have any youtube examples? ..............see ya mark

For older shows, it has to be the old Warner brothers cartoons or Star Trek. These two did more than entertain me. The cartoons instilled in me a love of music that I feel enriched my life. Classical, B-Bop, and Dixieland jazz, are three types I can directly contribute to the old cartoons.
In fact, B-Bop came from 'The 3 little Bops' - a re-take on the old '3 little Pigs' story. Dixieland Jazz came from 'Dixieland Droopy', and finally classical came from many sources; Rabbit of Sevil, What's Opera, Doc (nothing like Elmer Fudd singing Wagnerian works), and many, many others.
Star Trek however, left me with a sense of optimism, not just for space travel, but also a sense of tollerance, and our ability to get over the problems of society, and to lead ourselves to a greater future. I still believe in that, even though at the moment, we're in a bad time in history. It also triggured an intense desire to explore, and a sense of aw at the universe. Star Trek also showed me the people who was far different from me, and even the beauty of them. (Nothing like a gorgious green orion slave girl, rrrr! :) or should I mention the teen-age crush I had on M'Ress? (hehe)
However for new shows, nothing does that for me per-say but for pure enjoyment, Dirty Jobs, Dr. Who, Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica, Mythbusters, and Heroes is my 'drugs' of choice :). Bionic woman might be another choice soon, but too early to tell.

Gee Mark, that is a hard one. Growing up, my favorite show was Dick Clark's Bandstand. At present, my favorite show is "The Closer" with Kyra Sedwick playing the role of Brenda Lee Johnson.
Thanks for the Carson link. It was great. There will never be another one like him.
I am adding a You Tube link of Carson and Jack Webb in the Copper Clapper Capper.

I'd have to go with The Shield for drama and South Park for laughter. I'm not much on talk shows or game shows. History and Discovery channels are great but I don't consider them shows. More educational and awe at times.

Ken, you hit three of my favorites dead on!! I guess we more "seasoned" viewers have so much more from which to choose. I loved Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap (WKRP) and the episodes which showed who they really were. Coach (Cheers) would have my sides splitting just about every episode. M*A*S*H had you laughing and crying in the same episodes! LOVED Radar and his bear.
