Hunting season is starting and the bullets will be flying. Does anyone know if it is legal to discharge a firearm in the city limits? I have nothing against hunting. I just don't think it is safe for firearms to be discharged in the city limits. Please give me your feedback. Please consider the fact the schools are within range of several of the areas being hunted. Bow hunting is valid option and safer for innocence bystanders.

Thank You

I tell you what thro....it would cut down on a lot of crap around here if you could open the front door and blow a round off.....example.....The other night I was outside smoking and walked around the front of the house, the at the end of the street a guy got out of his car and was peeing in the road...I hollered..."Hey"....and he just waved at me....I was so mad....what a jerk!!!!

Did they change the law? Back in the mid 80's, Kentucky passed a preemption bill on gun laws. I can't remember the exact wording, but it went like, no city, county or municipality could pass a law stricter then the state. The new bill threw out a lot of gun laws all over the state. I think it was primarily directed at Louisville and Lexington that had a few not so gun friendly laws on the books. But it also threw out Maysville's law of of not discharging a firearm within city limits. Back then, the police told me, "Don't think you can start shooting squirrels out of trees." The police said they would most likely cite the individual with some sort of noise violation.

Naw it's been not changed.. Discharging a firearm in the city limits is not a law. It's a city ordinance. It's fine only, no jail time..

Is it an additional charge for each discharge or 1 ticket no matter how many rounds I shoot?

Back in '83, the city annexed the area for the new Meadowview hospital. I can't remember if it had even opened yet. The old city limits used to end right at Mason County High School. Two friends and myself went to the old rock quarry to crack off a few rounds. If I remember right, one friend and I had 22 rifles, but the other dude had a 357. We were just blasting at sticks in the water. Had no idea the city had annexed it. I'm can't remember if they had even moved the city limit sign. We weren't there 20 minutes when the police arrived to investigate a "complaint" of someone firing guns. Got the low down on the law and what could happen if he took us in. Sadly, I can't remember who he was, but he let us go as he could tell we didn't have a clue we were in the city limits. I keep thinking it was a couple of years later when the passed the law. I saw the cop in a store and asked about the preemption law, but it was more like: "Whatcha gonna do now?" That's when he told me they'd figure out some way to make it not worth my while to fire a gun inside city limits. Wish I could remember his name. Cool dude.

........I suppose Washington is now in the city limits.

I've pulled out the ol' 12 gauge & fired a few rounds in the back yard ( towards the big cornfield ) occasionally.

Gotta make sure it still works you know..........see ya mark

How much is the fine? So I can go outside, point a .40 at the ground and squeeze off a couple? With the intention of discouraging an action on someone else's part, like peeing in the street, and only pay a small fine? Hmmm....

In that case, who would even determine those rounds were fired by me, and my piece? Do you go on hear say? AS long as no one was threatened, fired at, or struck with a round; the violation is a small fine? That's pretty amazing.

Please don't shoot your guns in the air, just towards the dirt or at some sort of back stop and be wary of fragments coming back at you. God help you if you strike someone with an errant round/shrapnel.

All of these comments are great. But what about the safety of the people in the subdivisions and the children in our schools? I think most would be surprised of how many shots one can hear at Straub Elementary on opening morning of one of the gun seasons. I have friends who live in a subdivision on Maple Leaf Road and they said at times it sounds like a war zone.
There is nothing wrong with hunting. I do believe that guns should not be used near congested areas or schools.
