:)Well, it's Monday and I am winding down from a long week of Bible School last week! It was Mon-Friday, Zoo on Saturday, then the program was Sunday morning.
I taught the preteens, 9-12. We ended up having 40 kids total, and 20 something helpers. That was outstanding for our small country church! We had a promotion going, kids who attended all 5 nights got to go on a trip to the Cincinnati Zoo for free! I thought they were crazy when they told me they were going to do this, but it all turned out great!
I had 14 total at one time in my class, 7 of them came every day! The first day I kept it very laid back, since we were short on time, and I also wanted them to get to know each other. I kept each days lesson short & simple. We played games, and painted wood crosses. They seemed to really enjoy themselves. There were kids in my class from 4 different schools; Manchester, Ripley, Georgetown, and Mason County, KY. They were all very bright, some were shy, some outgoing, friendly, and overall they were pleasant.
They acted up a little bit, but I quickly set them straight, and it was fine. Our theme was "Wild West Witness", it was a program I found at a King James Version Bible website, and it turned out great.
The trip to the zoo we ended up having 7 vehicles, with 22 kids, & parents too. It was so hot Saturday, but that didn't stop us. The zoo offered us discounts, so that helped cut costs. Plus we took our own food for lunch. I had not been to the zoo since I was a kid, so I probably enjoyed it more than the kids..haha There was a couple of kids who went that may not otherwise ever went to the zoo because their families can't afford it. So we were very blessed to take the trip. It went fine, and I don't regret going at all!
The program was Sunday morning, and it was wonderful! I was told it was our best VBS ever, and we had quite a few kids go to the alter. My son got saved, on his own. No one pushed him to go either. I was pretty surprised!
Our preacher took the opportunity of having the parents there to preach a little to them. He asked them if their children had ever heard them pray. Then he went on to tell them they aren't being the parents they ought to be if they can't pray for their family. I could just sense the tension, and the people squirming. He told them not to just drop their kids off at church, but come with them. I know it may have sounded harsh, but it's the truth.
I hope that by seeing their children go to the alter to pray for their family, that they were somehow blessed. It sometimes takes a child to stir up your heart. I was very proud of the children, and I made sure to tell them all that they were more brave then the adults because they came up there to pray.
This was my first year teaching by myself, and it was such a blessing. I had a lot of fun, and I learned a lot about myself. I will never forget it. I hope to teach next year too, and hopefully we will always be blessed enough to do what we did this year!
I will be putting up photos of Bible School on our website, so if you get a minute go check them out!
