It's vacation time. And the Maysville Players invite you to take a trip around the globe. All you need to pack is your imagination. The Summer teen production of "Around the World in 80 Days" goes on stage July 26, 27, and 28 at 8:15pm and July 29 at 2:15pm at the Washington Opera House in downtown Maysville. This year's teen production is a radio drama. Director Robert Roe explains why he chose the format over a conventional production: "In the age of instant everything from food to phones, I thought it would be fun to show the cast and the community what putting on entertainment was like during the Golden Age of Radio."

The radio drama format will be interesting for the audience to see and hear. Instead of traditional stage sets, the actors will perform before microphones and props. When it comes time for a sound effect during a scene, the audience will see the unusual tools used to make the sound effect and hear the result. Lorita Roe, who created the effects for "War of the Worlds" and "A Christmas Carol" radio dramas for the Players, has outdone herself for this production, creating an army of marching men from wood blocks, gunshots from wood, hinges and a chamois, and a train speeding along from a collection of plastic bags.

Bringing "Around the World in 80 Days" to the stage are Lee Hamm, Terry Cunningham II, Becca Wallingford, Courtney Rosser, Emily Sticklen, Nikki Jarrett and Logan Gallenstein. Music for the production is under the direction of Cindi McIntosh.

The teens are responsible for every aspect of the production, from performance to lights to sound. "A show can't go on stage without people to take care of the technical aspect of a production," Roe says. "Having the teens run it themselves gives them a chance to see everything that goes into making a performance come together."

Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors. For more information on "Around the World in 80 Days" or upcoming Players productions, call 564-3134 or go online to www.maysvilleplayers.net.
