View Full Version : One Less Coyote In Maysville Today

ponto
July 19th, 2007, 02:09 PM
A coyote that had been attacking area livestock in the Maysville / Lewisburg area is no longer a problem.

The 2 year old male coyote was killed with a 17 cal. rifle when it ventured to close to the livestock.

As reported in previous stories, the coyotes have been a major problem for Mason County Farmers in the last couple of years.

If you need assistance with a coyote problem, you might want to call Frankie Reed.

He is a local farmer with a great deal of experience in dealing with Coyotes.

He can be reached by calling 606-882-2289.

OK, I am sure there will be people who will not like my post, but here goes. I know that coyotes in the area are a real problem and threat, but come on did you have to put the picture in there with it dead and being held up to show. He/she was a living thing, and I just don't agree with showing the picture of it.

I can say it is ok for this man to take a picture of this if he wants. But I thought this was a family site and would agree with the.....what's the word I want to say.......lack of taste in the posting of the pics. I say it that way for a lack of words to put it any other way. Posting the article I have no problem with. Again....this is just my opinion.

Okay, just a question. What is the difference between the pics of the animals you put on here and pictures of people in obituaries? I can understand a dead animal, but weren't these pictures in memory of them alive? Aren't we getting a little picky? Just my opinion.

I did not see anything wrong with the pics of the victims. They were pics while they were alive. Yes we see pics of people with their obits and I don't see a problem with that either.

Flame I wasn't directing my comment to what you said. I was leaning more towards Maxwells who said quote: " OK...Is this a slap in the face or what... I didn't agree with the dead coyote picture, as I would not of agreed if you would of put the victims on there dead as well. I am sorry these animals were killed.....food chain, ever heard of that." end quote. I may have took Maxwells quote wrong. Which it looks like I might have after rereading it a few times. I dont want to see pics of any animal dead, but of them when they were alive, I see no problem. And I don't want anyone to think I'm attacking. I was
just curious.

Personally, I don't hunt or anything, but I don't think there's any difference between having pictures of dead deer or coyotes on here. There's a hunting season for both, actually I think you can hunt coyote all year round. I couldn't kill a deer myself, don't have the heart to do it.. but I could kill a coyote. They have been known to attack small children when they aren't able to eat animals. Never heard of a deer doing that yet.... Unfortunately I have a husband who is a hunter, so I have to deal with it. He does eat the deer & turkey he kills though, and he hunts coyote for the farmers with baby animals around here. As long as they stay in the woods and eat what's in there, instead of attacking livestock they should be left alone. Although, when they step into a field or a barn to attack an innocent baby calf, or goat, it's time for them to be taken out. In a way they aren't going to suffer, and usually a gunshot is the fastest way. I don't like to see any animal suffer, even if I don't like it!

Chevy, I felt like it was a slap in the face because (Opinion Only) After I had made the comment on having the picture of the dead coyote, not one picture but three of them, the response from ponto was to show the victims that the coyote killed. I hate that any animals were killed and I know coyotes are a very dangerous animal to livestock and children and people. I just did not feel it was appropriate to have it flaunted on here since children get on here. I was offended by it, to some it may not bother, which is fine. Just my Opinion. I didn't want to see the dead coyote or his victims is what I am saying...I wasn't trying to offend anyone.

Was THAT coyote really the one that did the damage?? We have heard them all over these hills in Mayslick, and we've never had any problem over here. There are also a lot of calfs/cows/horses/dogs around this area. If he was the perpetrator I don't blame them for shooting him. I just hope they didn't shoot him just because he was crossing their land. Coyotes tend to get bad reps just like wolves, when they sometimes haven't done anything to deserve it.

The coyote story I reported on this morning was just an event I happened to drive up on. It was not planned and as most of you all know, I almost always have a camera with me.

The coyote was guilty of being in a field with livestock in an area that has had regular and consistent coyote attacks for several years.

In rural Maysville, like the old west, that sort of behavior can get you shot.

It seems that after talking to several farmers, there is a very low tolerance for any animal higher on the food chain than the livestock they are raising.

I decided to report the story. I tried to give both sides a fair "shot".

Sometimes photo journalism is a tough business.

I'm sadden by the report of the coyote being killed. But I understand it's not really it's fault. It's not aware of what cows are to others. If only there was a better way.

But good reporting nevertheless, Ponto.

OK... come on! I understand all about the not posting pics of dead coyotes... but get a life, this man lost family pets to this animal, if he wants to post a picture of what he lost let him! I mean really if STEPHWALKER wanted to post pictures of her beloved pup.. would there have been any objection??
I know Ponto personally and his animals are pets, not eaten. Just ask Molly the over fattened PET Highland cow.
Seriously... I had no idea that of all things happening in Maysville this would be what causes a stir.
Dang Ponto.... wanna hide in the den??

No one complained in the paper when they showed pictures of one of his goats with severe burns after his goat nursery caught fire.

I don't understand any of it. What's wrong with a dead coyote? People post their monster bass on here, nasty wrecks and sometimes even nastier opinions. Probably not the time or place for the discussion but I didn't see a problem with the original or edited version.

BTW.. Have coyotes? This cop will travel.. Love the hunt of a coyote...

Ok, I guess now its my turn. I have to agree with Foxy on this one to a "T". I grew up on a farm in Adams County and I can remember when my siblings and I wanted to play at night dad would crack the back door to see if he heard anything. Strange maybe but we lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere against the woods. All my dad was doing was making sure it was safe for us to go out and play. During the summer months when we would sleep with our windows open we could hear the coyotes call. It was frightening and yes my father did kill a coyote or two when I was younger and I'm sure he still does to this day. Does that make him a bad person for protecting his livestock/income? Me, I think not and would do the same thing in a heart beat.

I still can't figure out what is so wrong with posting pictures of the victims before they were victims. My opinion its paying a tribute to a life lost.

Great question. I think it is the natural human desire to see death and destruction just so we can be appalled by it. It is also coupled by the deep burning desire to control what others find interesting and, or acceptable.

Many states allow a bounty for coyotes, they are a foul, nasty animal much like wolves. I don't care much for animals unless they are eatable and I don't believe in ownership of animals under the subtitle of "Pet". Many of you know that about me already.

I don't intentionally harm an animal unless they are a direct nuisance to me. When they are a direct nuisance to others I don't begrudge them either for their actions.

But in sticking with the tune of Maxwell's post, I don't like the public display of dead or dying animals, this includes fish. With that in mind I understand others have the right to view all the dead animals they want. I also understand that people become attached to the little critters and want to call them pets, thats OK too.

The point of all this gibberish is just a simple reminder that when you read a thread you see many different opinions. None are better than others, they are just opinions. Allowing others to have an opinion is sometime hard. You just have to breakdown and allow other people to be different.

My turn, I lived in Nevada for a few years. In that state coyotes are consider varmits, (as is Jack Rabbits) and it is legal to shoot a varmits anytime u want even without a hunting license as long as u leave it will u shoot it, if u take it away u need a trapping license. U can even spot light varmins at night from a moving vehicle, which a lot of kids do at night for fun. Some people even that a live jack rabbit and hang it up over a fire alive just to have it make a loud noise so a coyote will think it is hurt and come to get it and then it is shot. Now this could be cruel to some, even me but coyotes cause a lot of damage in Nevada, even come in to towns and get your dogs and cats. In Texas u can be shot for being on someone property and they think u are thier to harm them or steal from them...Not long ago a guy was shot and kill in Texas trying to repo a car, Police couldnt charged the shooter because of the law.. Now i hear that Florida has pass a similiar law... Just something for u guys to ponder.... iam gone
