The Board of Education has amended the 2007-2008 calendar to provide early release time on Wednesdays for the purpose of structured, collaborative work at each school. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 and teachers will be able to work from 2:30 – 4:00 each Wednesday. We believe this will enable each school to have a better opportunity to know the needs of the students, and to make changes related to instruction that will help each student be more successful.

The 2:00 early dismissal time will apply to every Wednesday with the exception of the following:

First Day of School (August 8, 2007) – students will be at school all day.

Last day before Christmas Break (December 19, 2007) – students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m.

First day of school following Christmas Break (January 2, 2008) – students will be at school all day.

Last day of school (Friday, May 16, 2008) – students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m.

The 2:00 early dismissal time will:

Allow staff to work on personalizing and individualizing curriculum and to plan some real-life connections to use during teaching so that students can see why they need to learn certain information.

Create timely instructional, intervention, and enrichment opportunities throughout each grading period so students can be more successful -
Reduce number of failures

Work toward creating a culture of “whatever it takes” so that students do not fail

To identify instructional strategies that are working and ways we can help students master content

Identify areas of the curriculum that students have mastered.

Provide opportunities for teachers to plan together to insure consistency among classes – Among schools (science teachers at intermediate school meet with teachers at middle and at high, etc.)

Within the school - teachers who teach same subject as well interdisciplinary meetings among teachers

Provide opportunities for students involved in extracurricular activities time to participate in academic study skills activities that will be monitored by district staff.

Work with community organizations (Boy’s & Girl’s Club, YMCA, Maysville Community College) to provide additional opportunities for students.

Sincerely,
Kelly E. Middleton, Associate Superintendent
Mason County Schools
