View Full Version : The BBS Guest Posting

As many have noticed, guest are now allowed to post. This is a test to see how it works out for a week or so. Guest will still be allowed to Register by Clicking Here (http://www.maysvillekybbs.com/forums/register.php).

Guest are encouraged to register to enjoy the full benefits of the site. Registration is free and makes you part of a solid community of good people.

Existing members are asking,,, Why? It is simple,,, Numbers. By allowing people the chance to experience the power of this site they will be more likely to register and become active members.

Guest cannot start a new thread. I may play with that idea in the future but for now I say no.

Guest posting is some what moderated. As we do try to stay away from censoring opinions we will moderate based on family orientation. We quest to maintain a PG rating. In doing this we will also maintain a stricter enforcement of the Guidelines found at the top of each forum.

Post may seem anonymous but no post is ever totally anonymous. I would love to lie and say that it is but no site has any anonymity. Certain information is logged about each visitor. This is true for every site on the Internet. Most is only kept for statistical purposes. Never trust a site that says they offer anonymity.

This has the potential to work and I would like to see it work. If you don't like what a person has to say you can always report it as a bad post. You can find this by clicking the BAD icon in a post you wish to report.

If you have any questions please feel free to post them. Including guests.

I don't think its a good idea for guest posting, because if they want to post they should become a member. Their is nothing to it, it's easy. That just my opinon, and it's really up to the BOSS.

Thanks for deleteing my first post on this decision. This is not right. guests should not be able to post. The membership is free and only takes a few minutes. They are too afraid that someone will figure out who they are.

Stand up for what you believe in.

Get your own membership.

I think it's an ok idea, there's some people out there who are weary of signing up for stuff before they know what it's about. Especially the older people. It can drag in some drama though, but you can always delete that stuff.

Your post was deleted because you posted in the wrong thread and off topic of that thread.

After a week or so I will post a poll to see what the majority rule is, I want your opinions now and I am listening.

I need you to think of advantages too like:

1. Out of towner's wanting to post on one obituary or just one thread of interest. No need for a membership just for that.

2. People wanting to become familiar before committing.

You can still encourage active membership, you are just not force feeding it.

That's an excellent idea. I've got quite a few friends out of the area that I show this board, or at least something worthy of their eyes. I'll be sure to tell them of this particular post.

Someone mentioned posting for obits, etc. That's why I asked if there is a max number of posts one can do before registering.

I would set it at 10. The newbie should know whether they like what they see by then or not.

Once again, just my opinion...........see ya mark

hey Chuck, i agree with everything you said, it does give advantage to out of towners and people that may want to try us out before becoming members. So keep it up cause this place Rocks!!:drum:

Chuck, I see your points. Then only allow them to post on certain threads. Especially not the ones which become heated.
I just feel if they can post it then we should know who said it. All of these guests, how do we know if it is one person or 20 talking on one subject.

Mark, I understand that. I'm sure I may be one of the people you are talking about. I never mean to "beat" anyone up, I don't post much, but when I do I feel strongly about what I have to say. Others should to or they just should not say it.
Be proud of your post say what you mean through a free membership, or don't say it at all.

Amanda, just because I register doesn't mean you know who I am, so that kinda goes through the theory of anonymous. Those that post with a registered name and those that are guest posting both appear the same same to the moderators and owners of the site. Chuck and Daphne can see anyones IP address. So the only difference is instead of you seeing FOXY you see GUEST. I like the idea, with all the talk of hacking and stuff some are afraid that by registering they are opening their email address to spam.

There is a sense of anonymity with all of us here, my real name is not Foxy, and I know about 25 Amandas so there is know way to really know who you are unless you tell me your name.
Though we know that is not the case with the BBS, and I think we will get more regulars.
I too agree that there should be a limit of posts allowed.

A couple of points to consider.

I like the idea of limiting the number of posts, a person can do. Although I think it should be per thread, not total. As Chuck said, some out-of-towners may want to comment once in a great while.
One of my strongest contentions is this. I've been moding, basically for 15 years, and I've seen a lot of flamewars. Early on, I saw what anonymous posting can do, for it gives a person a sense of anomyonity (hope I spelled that right.) and with that, comes a sense of immunity. They can post what ever they feel, basically. Remember 'lackocash'? Now imagine hundreds of them.I'm not against guest posting, in fact I strong encourage it. But we need to see all sides of the debate.

As always, I will follow what the majority rules, and I'll keep doing my job to the best of my ability, with a lop-sided grin :p and I promise not to step on anyone's toes - even if they have steel-tipped boots

Foxy, I see your point. But how do we know if the guest is one person or ten. There is no real way to tell how many guests are posting on a certain thread.

I know my opinion doesn't count for much but I like the idea of guest posting. I also like the idea of limiting the number of posts before they have to register. It is completely free and to this date I've never received a bit of spam or anything else bad because of registering on this site. This place is great & I for one am very appreciative of all the people involved in setting it up & moderating it.

Limiting post to force registration is not a possibility. Your only option is IP Address and most of the time it changes. No way to track guest on average.
A real options more site managers.

No you can't track a conversation with a guest. I have thought of trying to limit them to 1 post per thread. That sounds more like a possibility than 10 or 20 posts. Long term I could acquire a 200,000 guest membership database that would be difficult to maintain.

It doesn’t bother me one way or the other guest/member…I feel all are welcome…all post have guidelines so they both are “moderated” as for IP addys, not sure really how that works but doesn’t it just show what area you are from??? This is a “Maysville” Board but it is still a “forum” on the Internet…so if it’s not private then it should be open to all as long as they follow the board rules…

Runs and hides in Foxy’s Den….lol

Since most people hide their idenity with made up screen names it really doesn't make a lot of difference if they just use " guest "
