View Full Version : Would you like to have a diabeties forum on the BBS?

Due to a couple of e-mails, Private mail, and a phone call, I've gotten the idea that a diabetes forum might be welcomed here on the BBS.
I'm on a mailing list, in which people from all over the planet come together for support, recipes, and general info. We help the newly diagnosed, as well as the older ones.
It would be great too, if we could get some of the local professionals on this forum as well to answer questions that we can't.
If you would like to have something here like that for the local folks, please respond to this.

I think that's a great idea. My Mom is newly diagnosed with Diabetes, so it would be good for her too. Plus, I'd like some recipes that I can fix for family gatherings.

An excellent idea Chuck; the mailing list I'm on also has people with several other problems that deal with GI problems, thyroid, and other metabolic disorders other than Diabetes. Maybe we should rename it to metabolic problems international, instead of Diabetes International :)
I'll do and donate what I can to our new forum, if you would be so kind to be it's godfather. Would we have to kiss your hand when we meet you?

Thats great, everybody would be able to learn different health problems and how to treat them. I would be inquiring on seizures, and first aid for seizures.

The main things for first aid for seizures is they will thrash around just don't let them hurt themselves. Do not try to restrain them as that can hurt them worse. You cannot swallow your tongue but your tongue can drop back and block your airway, DO NOT stick your finger in their mouth. You can use the back side of a spoon to hold their tongue down to keep it from falling back. If the seizure last more than a few minutes call 911 so they can be brought to the hospital for medicine to stop the seizure.

Amanda:
Your wish is my command. Here is Diabeties International's (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetes_int/)site. Also here is a few other sources, that helped me a lot when I was first diagnosed:
http://www.mendosa.com/
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes/
http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.support.diabetes/topics
(The last was the ones that lead me to the other sites. The usenet has been a great boon, even moreso than the web.)
Hope this helps!

Your right - it's a man thing. I didn't see the signs of my diabeties, until it was found in a routine check-up. But the signs was there for at least 5 years.

How much damage was done to your nerves by then? The problem is with diabetes it leaves the body with lots of problems to deal with for many years to come. I watch mine much more closely now that I have come to accept I have something that isn't going to just leave. Acceptance was the hard part for me. But I have become acustomed to walking on two feet and don't want to waste 3-4 hours 3 days a week on dialysis so I try to keep mine more controlled and this insulin pump really helps.
People say all the time I can't afford to go to the doctor or I don't have time. My answer as a nurse is "do you have time/money to die?".

It's very hard to tell. Thankfully the nerve damage I saw has cleared up finally. I had some 'dead' spots on my legs and fingers that have cleared up finally. My vision has returned to normal (I was getting night blind) But who knows what damage still is in need of repair?
Acceptance took about 30 minutes for me. That was the amount of time for me to get over the shock, and jump into the Usenet to start dealing with this fast. By the end of the day, I was on 5 different web sites, and reading as much as I could. I was like an info sponge. At least I read something that helped. They said in essence "Your not going to kneel over the next day, you have time..."
People say all the time I can't afford to go to the doctor or I don't have time. My answer as a nurse is "do you have time/money to die?".
AHEM!!! - I now visit my Dr every 6 months regardless, and hold out my arm to get stuck for blood tests. A slight pain from the needle, is nothing compared to what I could go though. Shots, operations, blindness, or heaven forbid! Hospital bills!
I'll leave another post for everyone here about what happened to me.

Many consider diabetes a death sentence, to me it was a blessing.
I had slight night blindness, several 'dead' areas on my fingers, and legs (where I had no feelings at all there), and painful knee and foot joint pain, and of course always hungry, and thirsty, and not to mention my blood pressure was stage 1 hypertension.
With a total turn around of my life, I lost 100 lbs, my arthritis is gone since I started biking/walking every day, and my BP is now slightly below normal :) For the first time in the past 3 years, all the problems have finally cleared up caused by either the diabetes, or the complications in learning how to deal with it. I started out, as an a1c of 11.7, within 3 months, 7.1. By six, I was in the 5.7 range.
My philosophy dealing with this is; It's not going to take me. I'll go into the night, kicking and screaming, and it won't be diabetes that takes me. :)
Anyone can be complication free if they really want too. I got very scared when I was told, so I forced myself to change totally. I swore off all sugar, eat very low carb (around 60g per day), eat right and bike or walk every day (bike on a stationary bike if the weather is inclement). I also keep my BG in very tight control. I've been that way for 3 years, so if I can do it, anyone can. My last a1c was a 5.3.
I have read of T1 diabetic twins who are 80+ years old, who was diagnosed before insulin, and yet they've had no bad complications. So if they can live 80+ years with T1, then T2 won't be a bit of a problem....
Provided I keep my BGs under tight control, and my a1c in the 5.x range. That's the rub, and it may be a challenge, but I will do it regardless.
When they have a confirmed cure for it, I'll spend every dime I have to get it as well.
So don't dispair people. If you get it, get treatment, and your lifestyle changed, ASAP. and keep hope, for a cure IS on it's way. At least I'm optimistic of it :).
