Released by: Major Ron Rice, MPD

Maysville Police arrested Joey R. Morton, 27 of 126 Central Avenue, Maysville, after receiving a report of, and investigating, a man breaking into the rear door of Munafo's Jubliee, located at 1200 Forest Avenue, Maysville.

At approximately 4:10 AM police communications received an E-911 call from a Ledger Independent carrier stating a man was trying to break into Jubilee and has almost succeeded. The man was described to police as being black; wearing a black shirt with socks over his hands. Prior to the arrival of police, the man had gained entry to the building.

Officers surrounded the building as police K-9 and the Emergency Response Team were notified. Police units on scene ordered the man from the building with the use of vehicle public address systems to no avail. At 4:55 AM Mr. Morton attempted to exit the building through a hatch in the roof where he was apprehended by waiting officers. After a period of time the building was searched for additional suspect by the ERT team. No one was located as the area was declared safe by team leader Sergeant Jared Muse.

Members of the Maysville Fire Department, who provided ladders for access to the roof and deputies from the Mason County Sheriff's Office, assisted the Maysville police department at the scene.

Morton was charged with burglary in the third degree, which is a class D felony, and alchol intoxication in a public place. Officer T.C. Rice, whose investigation is continuing, lodged Morton at the Mason County Detention Center.

First, why would some moron break into the Jubilee??!?!!? Second, what was he doing in there that it took 45 minutes to catch him?
But I would like to say Good Job MPD for responding quickly and catching him.

I'd say it took 45 minutes because they were unaware if he was armed or not and if you remember Danny Hay lost his life investigating a robbery at a gocery store. It is best to take a little longer and everyone be safe.

I agree with you, you never know what you are coming up on, on any robbery report in progress. My husband went to school with Danny. Danny's family are wonderful people, and this was a terrible crime, I remember it well. So if it takes 45 minutes or however long, it is best to be safe and aware of what is going on before taking any actions right away.

Well handled situation by the sounds of it. It really shows how professional and prepared our Police and EMS are. 45 minutes from the time the received the call to completion is a very, very fast time compared to most possible scenarios. A full building search would have taken more time than that.

Most normal calls that an officer responds to is 1 hour or longer. This situation cold have turned bad quick.

Kudos the MPD, MFD and all other EMS responders. Job very well done.
