Tibby, a compact chestnut, spent many years escorting fancier and more flamboyant horses up and down the racetrack, up and down so many times that he got hurt with a painful and debilitating bowed tendon.

The fact is that track ponies are indispensable to the track so long as they can walk, trot and canter. When they require a lot of stall time, healing and TLC, well, frankly, Tibby turned pretty dispensable.

He could have been sold at an auction, or like about 90,000 other horses every year, ended up in a slaughterhouse.

Instead, he's getting lots of stall time, lots of healing and lots of TLC. Tibby is one of the first residents of the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, the first shelter in the state for all breeds of horses.
