ConAgra Foods Inc. told consumers to discard certain jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter after the spread was linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened almost 300 people nationwide.

Lids of jars with a product code beginning "2111" can be returned to ConAgra for a refund, the company said.

The salmonella outbreak, which federal health officials said Wednesday has sickened 288 people in 39 states since August, was linked to tainted peanut butter produced by ConAgra at a plant in Sylvester, Ga.

ConAgra is no stranger to recalls. Another good reason to know your local grower and buy local.

Why is the media saying throw the peanut butter away and not informing people of the refund?

Wouldn't you need to save the jar if you have a claim against the company?

No, the lot code and date are stamped on the lid.

Chuck - the media is not saying save the lid................

Of course you could always go on EBAY and buy a jar of the recalled peanut butter if you threw yours away. Starting price is $500.00 - Here is the description from the EBAY auction.

Ok here is the deal: I made a peanut butter sandwich a few weeks ago, a few days later I had bad stomach cramps and the runs, just the flu right! Well Sunday 11 Feb my wife made toast with the peanut butter on it, Tuesday night she was feeling bad with stomach cramps, headache and got worse for the next 2 days. She is better now. Was it the peanut butter or something else? I am not selling this for CONSUMPTION!!!!! or ILLEGAL purposes so bid accordingly. Thank you

Cool, I'll switch channels.

I would say that because of all the advertising Con-Agri does, this is being glossed over on the refund thing.

They are still going to get nailed on the lawsuits.

I wish people realized how fragile our food distribution system really is.

The first set of lawsuits have already been filed starting this week.

If you have any medical bills and the jar of peanut butter, you should contact a lawyer to advise you.

I agree with you THEMAN Jiffs is the best. I went home and had a jar of Peter Pan 2111 on the lid, I used it for Christmas cookies. So what do I do with it. My cookies didn't turn out either. No Bake Cookies.

I had 2 cans, but thankfully no problems here. One was that 'whipped' peanut butter which I found to be - eh - and the other was a normal type. Both now are in the trash.
