Walter E. May, president of Pikeville Medical Center, has turned what began as an in-house hospital newsletter into a weekly publication that is now being mailed, free, to 66,900 homes in Pike, Floyd and Letcher counties.

The Medical Leader (http://www.medicalleader.org/pmc_news.html) is siphoning advertising from the counties' largest newspapers and hiring some of their employees.

The Medical Leader covers government meetings and has an editorial page, a sports page, an obituary page and lots of color ads -- including the insert for Food City, the Abingdon, Va.-based grocery chain.

I have to wonder, if the Beat had started charging for papers would they still be here today?

I would have paid for a subscription.

The Beat failed because they didn't follow rule number one for a start up newspaper.

I too was sad when they decided to stop printing.

By the way, subscription money was not the problem.

If you enjoy watching journalism in the area, the latest efforts by the Flemingsburg Gazette (http://www.flemingsburggazette.com/) are beginning to unfold.

Well that can't be right. The number one quote from the newspaper world is "STOP THE PRESSES!" :)

I'm glad Gary Barker has a regular place for his Head of the Holler column. It's good Kentucky reading.
