BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein struggled briefly after American military guards handed him over to Iraqi executioners. But as his final moments approached, he grew calm.

He clutched a Quran as he was led to the gallows, and in one final moment of defiance, refused to have a hood pulled over his head before facing the same fate he was accused of inflicting on countless thousands during a quarter-century of ruthless power.

A man whose testimony helped lead to Saddam's conviction and execution before sunrise said he was shown the body because "everybody wanted to make sure that he was really executed."

"Now, he is in the garbage of history," said Jawad Abdul-Aziz, who lost his father, three brothers and 22 cousins in the reprisal killings that followed a botched 1982 assassination attempt against Saddam in the Shiite town of Dujail.

Iraqi television showed what it said was Saddam's body, his head uncovered and the neck twisted at a sharp angle.

The footage showed the man identified as Saddam lying on a stretcher, covered in a white shroud. His neck and part of the shroud have what appear to be bloodstains. His eyes are closed.

The reason I asked if the pic was necessary is that you can go looking for pictures of Saddam with a noose around his neck if you want to, I just wasn't expecting to be blind sided by it. Sorry if that upsetted anyone.

I really wasn't upset I was just to make sure we weren't too concerned with being politically correct.

Ah, nah, that's not what it was about. I've seen much worse in pics, videos, and in person. It was just the blind sided thing and thinking about the kids is all.

I have read up on what happens to someone who is hanged. This is just my personal belief and I do not wish to debate it. Hanging is the absolute worst way to be executed.

From past pictures and information I read I would normally agree but if you seen the whole video either Saddam died instantly or,,,, use you imagination.

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Unfortunately, since Saddam didn't have enough eyes or teeth to clear the slate of all of the innocent people that he was responsible for executing I guess his one miserable life will have to suffice. What I can't figure out is - why is there such an uproar over his execution? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WORRIED THAT HE WAS "MISTREATED" PRIOR TO HIS HANGING? Did he show any remorse for what he did during his life? Did he give any protection or comfort to the thousands that died as a result of his "leadership skills"? Something is terribly wrong here, people.

The only thing wrong with his execution is that it killed him too quickly; he should have suffered at least for a few minutes. I wonder how many of his victims' faces flashed by in his mind's eye just before the trap door opened? This post will probably be removed - not politically correct, I guess. I am stating what a lot of people are thinking right now. Give it up; Saddam got what he deserved. Maybe if a few of this country's convicted killers got the same punishment there would be fewer senseless murders.

..........I couldn't agree with you more.

I figured others would agree also, but sometimes I wonder, especially the press. You think they would jump all over this with TV coverage but one hardly heard much about it. The internet was where everyone saw it 1st. I suppose it would give Bush some credit & we can't have that can we??

Here's more about it:

The grainy video that appeared on the internet, is just one more star on the refrigerator of citizen photo journalism.

Main-stream media has glossed over terrible acts all over the world and it will take this kind of "in your face" news reporting to change the world and how we treat each other.

Peoples actions are changed everywhere, everyday because people look up and realize a nearby citizen is holding a camera.

Not wanting to be "caught on tape" their actions are altered because of the fear of true and accurate reporting that a live video offers.

When the world decides hanging is bad, changes will be made, and if the world decides hanging is good, changes will be made.

sadaam deserved worse.

they should've left the rope behind his head and shortened the drop,
that would've insured his slow excruiating death.
