Why am I up posting at 3:00 am in the morning. Stress is the best answer. That and the server calls my cell phone when it is in trouble. Isn't technology toady a wonderful thing? Not when you rather sleep.....

On the Oct. 24th the server had a hard drive go out and we had to switch to a backup hard drive.

Many people noticed that they could not reach the server about 7am to 8am the morning of the 24th.

We need to replace this hard drive some time this week end. The site will be down for about 1 hour for this maintenance.

This Hard drive had only been in service from 21294 hours or 2.5 Years. People also ask me why there hard drives have went bad only after a few years of use. The answer to that question is "A Whole Lot of Use".

A hard drive is design to last about 5 years without failure under normal use. What is normal? Not what a server goes through.

A normal computer with an email virus for example could shorten it's life by 1440 hours (60 days) a week. That couples with a once a week Scandisk and Defrag would add another 336 (14 days) of wear and tear on a drive.

This is opinion based on everything having a "Finite Life". A door can only be opened so many times before it will fall off. A battery can only start your car so many times before it needs replaced. The more you use stuff the quicker it goes bad.

This is a "Sorry in Advance" post for the future downtime of the site. It is necessary however. The only reason I tell you is I believe people deserve the truth up front rather than a lie after the fact.

...............Chuck, just wait till 2AM Saturday night & work on it an hour...with the time change, it will be a free hour & you won't even have to change the clock!!

LOL

BTW, I'm curious, how many "hits" does this site receive now compared to 2 years ago when there were fewer posts??

If you don't want to reveal that info, that's fine.

There are so many posts lately, I can hardly read all of them!
I'm assuming with all the recently new patrons, it has to be getting a ton of hits.

Regardless, this is still a great local site, a place everyone can get lot's of info & speak their minds.
Thanks...........see ya mark

Chuck:

Been there, done that, where's the money to replace the *computer part of your choice*. :)

Be SO nice if flash memory could match the storage of HDs, wouldn't it? Last a lot longer, hmm? :)

Videos of forums will be a day behind. Need to wait on the new hard drive before I upload. Don't want to crash the site over an upload that can wait.

The next generation of hard drive will be flash type memory. Look for 150 gig's next year starting at about $5000 bux. They will drop really quick.

Check out the 64 gig drive. http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/29/buslinks-64gb-usb-2-0-flash-drive-pro-2-series/

Ponto can confirm I predicted by 2008 we will see terminals that will except you flash drive with OS and data. Take it with you anywhere.

Brother!!!! and I thought that was just a pipe dream. But I guess, if holographic storage is finally coming out, then flash can too. I want some now!! Now all we need is quantum computers, and I'll be happy :)

Chuck just a quick question. Is the Police Scanner not working because of the hard drive problem?

You can already boot Windows from a thumb drive and Linux boots from CD or thumb drive have been around for some time. I haven't tried the Windows because I haven't need to, but the Linux boots are kind of cool. Plop in a CD and restart, happy Penguin.

Same here. It acts like its loading but it doesn't. Doesn't even say anything in the black area where it used to.
