Legend has it the worms can predict the winter weather in the months to come by the color of their fur. Each worm has 13 sections that represent the 13 weeks of winter. Black fur means we're in store for some harsh, snowy weather. Brown or tan fur means milder temperatures on the way.

It's completely unscientific, but Ponto says the woolly worms are just as accurate as any other forecast!

Woolly Worm Racing comes to Mason County

The first Saturday in November, at 1 PM the Herb Farm @ Strodes Run will host a Woolly Worm Race to decide which Woolly Worm will actually predict the winter weather for our county.

This event is open to all those interested in raising money for their group.

An entrance fee of $ 5.00 is required with 100% of the entrance fees returned to the winning worm's group or organization. The winning group can then claim the title of the Official Weather Predicting Woolly Worm for Mason County.

How to Enter the Woolly Worm Races

Get a Woolly Worm

There are many ways to get your very own Woolly Worm to race. One is to bring one with you from home.

The drawback to this method is that if you live in the city, your woolly worm may not be used to the herb farm weather and may be sluggish.

Another alternative is to wait until you get to the herb farm to start looking for your woolly worms. But this could take all day.

Or you can purchase a woolly worm from a woolly worm wrangler at the farm.
That is if the farm can find a woolly worm wrangler. If you would like to be the wrangler of the day, contact the Herb Farm.

Name Your Woolly Worm
This is a very important step. The name you give your woolly worm can reflect your aspirations of his (or her) performance. You should be able to take pride if your woolly worm's name is called as the winner of the race!

Obtain A Registration Form
The official woolly worm race registration forms will be available at the entrance to the Herb Barn.
.
Visit The Registration Table
The registration table will be located near the large, raised platform where the races will be held.

At the table, you will turn in your registration form, pay the $5 registration fee, and you will be assigned a Heat Number.

Listen For Your Heat To Be Called
The races move along quickly. When your heat is called, go directly to the race board.

Go Up To The Race Board
This is it! Get ready to race and good luck!

All announced race results will be considered official and no appeal is available.

Yesterday and today are going to be great for collecting your woolly Worms.

The warm weather has the little guys looking for a new home for the winter.

Yesterday visitors to the Herb Farm @ Strodes Run (http://www.strodesrun.com) were treated to a sample of the Woolly Worm races.

The Herb Farm's worm just sat there while one of the visitors worms ran the track twice.

If you have never seen a woolly Worm Race, check out this site. LINK (http://www.woollyworm.com/)

Yes, the first prize was over $ 1000.00

This can be a great fund raiser for your group, but slow registration seems to reflect a much lower take home for the local winner of this years event to be held at the Herb Farm @ Strodes Run.

Race times have been changed to 1 pm Saturday November 4th. The farm worm wrangler has to work a real job Saturday morning till noon.
