View Full Version : Cablevision Problem?

Trying to figure out if I have trouble in my setup or Cablevision is having a problem. I’m seeing sporadic losses of signal quality at times on my TV. No rhyme or reason, but it seems to happen more in the evening hours. This means that most of the channels pixilate out until the dreaded “This channel available shortly” message appears. This also drives the DVR nuts if I’m recording something. Lots of times it just locks up and I can’t even fast forward past the bad section. Sometimes it won’t even let me delete the bad recording forcing me to do the unplug/plug routine. Most of the times the signal loss is only for a few minutes but I have seen it deteriorate for over an hour. When it happens it is very quick (Instantly) and just as quick to return to normal. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Or do I need to start checking all the cables in my setup?

I've been noticing that around Lexington Pike too. The internet signal is also been affected as well. No pattern too it. I'm suspecting the weather. After that real severe storm we had a few weeks ago, I couldn't get on the internet at all, and our TV was really almost unwatchable. I was getting 'Signal lost'

I’m not glad to see someone else with the problem, but I am glad that I know that it is not my setup. Checking all those cables would have been a hassle. Been there, done that. Just today, Kim said the TV had quit. Screen totally black. I could feel the blood drain from my face as it is a big screen. I put it on channel 12 and the pic was barely visible. Probably lasted 2 minutes. But that 2 minutes can really screw up the DVR if you have it recording. I can’t pin it on the weather. Seems to do it no matter what is going on outside. Hey, thanks for the reply. I can breath a little easier now.

Your more than welcome, and I see now I'm glad I don't have a DVR. The VHS taping tapes those 'Signal lost' programs without a bit of a problem ;)
I'll have to see if MythTV is bothered by such, before I try to build my own TIVO now. :)

Yes, I live in Washington and we have been having the same problem. Infact we just lost our signal this evening for about 15 mins. One day last week it was out for a couple hours. I called Limestone and they said they were getting a signal so they didnt know. If you find anything out let me know.

I haven’t called Cablevision because I didn’t know where the problem was. And I haven’t called because the problem will be gone before they arrive. Since more people than me is having the problem, I hope that they are working on a solution.

I would call the cable company. Even though others might report a similar problem it could be something isolated to you home. A coincidence that you could be spend months waiting and no solution.
I am downtown and have no issues.

Well Kim confirmed that when the problem happens, it affects the TV in the bedroom. That’s on it’s own line from the box outside the house. So the next time I can catch it, I’ll run out there and wiggle the wires on that connector. I hate to call Cablevision because I know the problem will be gone by the time they get here. It’s hard to check a system that is functioning properly.

Well, TV started messing up again yesterday, so I called. Cablevision said they would send someone out. Of course, when they called back later, it was OK. The guy said they are aware of a problem in the Lewisburg area, but can’t find it. The signal is never bad when they try to find it. He did say they thought it was an amplifier, but didn’t know which one it was. He described my symptoms to a T. We pretty much both agreed that Cablevision would have to wait for the component to fail completely before they could find it. But he did say he was not aware of problems anywhere else in the system. So if anyone else is having the same problem, give ‘em a call. You’re not on their radar. They will try to find the problem.

Just a heads up. Cablevision replaced some components yesterday, so they are trying. Hats off to them.

I too live on Third St. and my internet SUCKS lately.
Average 900k down and 2600 up, on 6Mb service.
No matter what speed test or server, same results.
I heard more bandwidth will be added by Monday to remedy the problem.

I spoke with Jeff Craycraft on Tuesday.
It seems we have a 33Mb connection which is being upgraded to 45Mb in the next few weeks if I understod correctly.
He also stated that 2500 customers are using about 40% capacity, except during peak times, and only 40 or so have 6Mb service.
All I know is my 4 friends, all within 1/2 mile of EPT on Second St, 3 of which have 6Mb service, the other has 2Mb. All of our internet service has been unusually slow, even during non-peak times.

I usually get 1Mb or less down and 1.5 to 2.5 up to Chicago.
What does everyone else get and what service do you have?

My cable internet has sucked for the last three weeks. Often can't get on line, and very very slow. I think I'll go back to dial up. It was faster.
