This caught my eye:

I tend to agree with the disagreements on news sources, and newspapers on the web. This article may be quite useful for us CJs (Citizen Journalists).

I have no problems with the Maysville paper's web site. It's got ads, but it's not to the point of annoyance. The old gray lady (NY Times) However, with their 'registration' and login, pushes too far.

I think the BBS, is more like InciWeb (on the article) in which we can get breaking news fast though it, without wading though silly registrations, and other things that make on-line newspapers, almost worthless.

Thoughts?

I have thoughts, in fact on CJ I have lots of thoughts.

When the Ledger, with rare exception, post to their website on Friday night, we do not hear from them again until Sunday night and or Monday morning for some of the left over Friday content.

The one recent exception, which I applauded them for, was the plane crash in Lexington.

I would like to see them provide news and photo updates on Saturday and Sunday.

Until that time, the BBS will remain the premier web site in Maysville.

And I might add, the BBS has risen to the occasion to add other features that the Ledger site, if it follows the model of most newspaper sites, will never be able to duplicate.

I would like to see more CJ photos on the BBS and breaking news items.

The BBS has the readership, now let's get more local people posting stories.

Good points there, Ponto. I too would like to have a weekend edition of the web Ledger. One thing I'd like for any paper. A regular sized sunday paper, with just news - just like every-other-day, instead of the bloated $2 sunday paper we get from Lexington now. At least an alternative edition like that. That's where a web based paper could do well, since the cost wouldn't be as high for a paper - paper.

Count me as a CJ here, and I'll post more when I get 'em. I'm certainly out enough.

I predict some interesting things to come in regards to this issue, but alas I cannot say more about that.

I can say what would need to happen for local news via the web to be rewarding. Trust me, I live and breathe web related stuff and probably think about these things more often than most. Toss the world news to the side because that is already vastly covered by a number of new sources on the web. For local news to really pan out, four things are involved: 1) People need to be in the habbit of reporting news (the journalists), 2) People need to be in the habbit of choosing a web site as their news source (the audience), 3) Something needs to happen often enough for people to be in the habbit of checking the web site (the stories themselves), and 4) People would need to care (the interest).

Maysville, being a small town, is seriously lacking in several of those areas. But again, I do predict changes in how the web affects Maysville. The average Maysvillian just don't know yet what is possible.

..............regarding newspaper reporters, I see the national news is just stories taken from the AP & that can be read anywhere.

I too feel the web will someday be the place to read the news 1st.

It's already happening here by being able to read headlines here before the morning arrives...........see ya mark
