FLEMINGSBURG -- With another school shooting fresh in the minds of students, administrators and parents, many schools are double checking security efforts.

As long as the Kentucky statutes do not allow weapons on school property, the sicko criminal element know that schools are an easy environment for them to do their dastardly deeds. I think that the law should be changed to allow for school teachers and administrators who have concealed carry permits to be armed. Not knowing who may be armed, the criminals may have second thoughts about entering a school to harm someone. At present, they know that most likely they can perform their evil without fear of being confronted by any opposing force. It's statistacally proven that where citizens are allowed to be armed, the crime rates are down.

I understand your point ynotamerican, however, I personally do not want a teacher with a gun in the school. What if a student over powers the person with the gun? Maybe the student didn't have a weapon when they went to school, got in an argument with staff, and got their gun away from them?

I would oppose teachers carrying guns in the classroom. I believe it is our responsibility help ensure our children's safety by using other means.
I don't believe anyone is as good as they think the are with a firearm when live targets are involved. Also the more guns that are at school the less a crazed gunman would need to take with him.
Breaking it down to 3 unique personality's when it comes to a situation like this.
1. People that are unarmed running for cover.
2. People who are armed shooting while running for cover. (The most dangerous)
3. Suicidal People who are armed and taking calculated shots because they wants to die.
Now most everyone knows I am not anti-gun as you know. I do support trained armed security in the schools. Most schools still oppose this.
The best solution is Proactive Prevention.
Our schools have a good surveillance system. At least most of our schools if not all of them. Our school system is looking at want is going on and is always seeking for solutions to prevent potential problems like this.

I don`t think we should have guns in school. I do think our school systems are too relaxed when it comes to security and surveillance.I know of a child that was in kindergarden and got on the wrong bus and the school system said it was the childs fault. It just so happens that this child did not go to preschool and was not familair with the bus system and when this happened he was riding a different bus with a different driver every day somtimes a different bus and driver from morning to evening. He was found on the other side of the county when the bus driver seen him and knew he was on the wrong bus.The mother was very upset and when talked to the school superintendent about her concerns(child upduction and etc.) she was told this is a rural area and there is no need to be upset, the things she is concerned about don`t happen here like they do in the bigger cities. Our school systems need to wake up before its too late. I`d bet you could walk into most of the school systems in our area and do what you want with very little trouble at all!!! Roadrunner

Every year I fill out a paper for the school, giving phone numbers and social security numbers of the people I will allow to pick up my daughter. I really wouldn't have a problem doing this if the people at the desk would ask to see a form of id to check to see if that person is on my list. It hasn't happened yet, and she is now in high school. So I very much agree that something reguarding security needs to be done in our schools. Look what happend to the Amish school in Pa. It would be foolish to sit here and think that bad things couldn't happen to our schools because this is a rual area. I don't think that teachers carrying weapons would be the answer though. There must be other ways.

The events in other towns and in Maysville should be a serious wake up call for our schools and other locations where the public gathers.
There are people in this town with guns and an attitude that makes day to day life in Maysville more dangerous than ever.
Along with the schools, the courthouse and other areas are lacking in basic day to day security measures.
This is may become a serious problem as we grow as a regional community.

St. Patrick has gone to a lock down system, every day.
From now on you will have to ring a bell, and be let in the door by a staff member.
Soon they will be installing cameras at the main entrance and an intercom system so that visitors will have to ring in, be identified by staff via the video cameras and then buzzed in.
Of course, being a small school, the staff knows all of the parents, so that helps.
I personally think it is a good thing! They also only open the main entrance in the mornig when students arrive now.

This is a great thing .All schools should be doing this. Roadrunner

This is a hugh potential problem for all school systems, however, I would oppose teachers or any other school personnel carrying guns. Armed security folks is a good idea.

Highly trained armed security folks would be better...;)

Personally I think they should be contracted through the local police department so as to have powers of arrest and the use of department resources.

I think the school system should hire an SRO, or several SROs, under the purview of the Sheriff's office or the Police department.
Surely the school system has the money to pay a decent wage to trained officers to secure our schools?

PD tried to do that several times. But for some reason.. the grant kept falling through.. And the city ain't gonna pay for a full time officer at the schools..

The way it seems the city would rather be in the real estate business than to do something that might protect our children.

Heck PD is down three officers now. And they are only going to let the Cheif Hire ONE to replace those three.. So I would have to agree with your last statement. I get tired of hearing that they can't afford it, or that we don't need that many.. Give me another VALID excuse...

Why should the city provide security for the school system?
Seems the school has plenty of money to buy real estate, maybe they should hire trained security. Doesn't the school system have tons of money, they sure spend it like they do.

We have lost 3 officers and they are going to replace 3 with 1? What the heck is up with that. No wonder criminals get away with so much around here.
Don't know if city officials realize this but FYI in case you missed it!!!! Maysville has grown over the past 20 years. We need more officers to keep this community safe
Now there should be some type of security at our school system. Don't care if it comes from a grant or my tax paying behind, our children need protecting from this type of tragedy.

Here is a wake up call for our School System. I have had someone that is NOT on my list to pick up my children and to sign out under an alias name to see if the school system would catch it. Guess What? They had no clue, did not ask for identification or nothing.
I was however on the premises in case there was a problem.
This should be a reality check for some parents. Seems if your kids know the person that is picking them up then the school system will let your child go with them.
