I have heard a couple of rumors about Wal-Mart's law away.
1.) That layaway will be changing for the Christmas season. (This was told to me by a friend who's mother works at Wal-Mart)

2.) That law away is going to be completely stopped. (This was mentioned to me by a friend that has a daughter that works in that dept. There was a meeting only a couple of days ago, and they basically told her that she could resign or be reassigned once the layaway dept closes.)

Anyone here got any more details on this?

Just talked to a manager at Wal-Mart. She said they are considering doing away with all Lay-a-Way's but not at this time.

There is a change in the Christmas Lay-a-Way plan.
1. The Last day to Lay-a-Way for Christmas will be November 19th.
2. Last day to pick-up your Christmas Lay-a-Way will be December 8th.
3. Your Lay-a-Way will be canceled on December 9th if not picked up.
4. Lay-a-Ways may or may not be resumed in January. That is yet to be determined.

That is the word I got 15 minutes ago on the phone. 759-5040 for more information.

KMart has no Lay-a-Way changes planned. There Lay-a-Way policy is simple. Put it in Lay-a-Way, get it out within 8 weeks. The closer Christmas gets the pick up time shortens to help make sure all Lay-a-Ways are out by December 24th for the January inventory.

Called KMart a few minutes ago to verify. 759-7158

I personally perfer KMart. They have much better customer service to me.

According to Pat Curran, executive Vice president of store operations, the rumor circulating is true.

Curran released a statement that said "demand for layaway service has declined steadily as customers turn to other options".

Walmart is working to offer customers new payment options.

Some people think this will be in the form of credit cards. More money in credit cards than layaway.

Here is the Official Release on the topic.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060914/ap_on_bi_ge/wal_mart_layaway

Layaway services are used mainly by people at the lowest end of the income scale, who don't have credit cards and may not qualify for credit, analysts say.

Sound to me like they just don't want to be bothered with people that don't have the money to pay it all up front.

I would bet a large amout of their high end electronics are done Lay-a-Way. I bet you will see Lay-a-Ways return.

A typical layaway department has three employees.

Multiplied by Wal-Mart's 3,256 U.S. discount stores and Supercenters, that would mean around 10,000 people will be affected.

As demand for layaway has dropped, the costs have gone up because the department has fewer customers.

And after Christmas, the department will have NO customers.

It's all about the money,.............That is how you keep score, and that is why Wal-Mart is winning.

I work with individuals in the community that are at or below poverty level, in order for some of these families to get their children christmas gifts and school clothes, layaway is a saving grace. This is sad to hear that they don't consider these consumers. They will lose business I think especially if they are going to credit cards, not everyone has a steady income or the credit to have one... so what about those consumers, they can't buy anything unless they have cash in hand??? SAD!

That is what I am concerned about anb_swrk. I like the lay-away. If I can't put it in lay away, then I probably just won't buy it. I would take my money to a store that has lay away.
The person I mentioned above is worried because they said that they could lose their job. The suggestion from he "higher ups" is that they will move them to other dept. but if ya ask me that would lessen the hours of those working in those other departments. So it is a completely LOSE LOSE situation. Wal-Mart loses customers, and the employee loses hours which equals to them losing money.
I guess for some of them the good news is there are a couple of new big retailers coming that can hire them. i.e., Lowes...

Lowe's, which is also owned by Wal-Mart.

So sad for people who really need layaway.

Lowe's is not really owned by Wal-Mart. I made a statement similar to this in the past. What I was trying to say is that their business agendas are the same. Move in, Take over and have the people at their mercy for their retail goods and jobs.

Umm, yeah, since ya know I can read and stuff and it was posted earlier in this very thread that Lowe's and Wal-Mart share the same wallet. (Aside from that I already knew it.)
Besides, I was referring to Wal-mart it's self losing money not Lowe's.. although they share the same wallet.

With a little luck, maybe Maysville will be the first town in America that all citizens can learn the fact that Lowe's and Wal-Mart are not the same company financially speaking.
