My little girl can't wait to be in your junior class. I can't wait for lessons to begin, so she quits bugging me about when it's going to start...lol. :)

When you say self defense classes, just what are we talking about.
I am basically a non confrontational person, but I would like to be able to remain calm when challenged by someone.
The kind of calm you have when walking in the dark with a large dog knowing you are safe from predators.
You know, kind of like showing up at a knife fight with a gun.
I think it would be very cool knowing I could take down a thug with one quick motion and walk away leaving the bad guy on the ground.
Seriously, what kind of things are going to be taught at the class?

It is very difficult for me to sit here and explain concepts of motion in written form. A visual demonstration is much easier for getting the point across. Many styles of martial arts focus on kicking and basic striking, others work on trying to get an opponent to the ground and forcing a submission etc., still others are mainly sport versions of older self-defense systems. Kenpo attempts to provide the practitioner with "options". In other words, if your buddy is messing with you and puts you in a headlock, then you only need to escape the hold. If someone confronts you verbally, then you should disuade them verbally. If someone punches you in the face, then you need to recover and prevent further damage to your person or perhaps intercept and cause moderate damage of your own. If your life is in danger, then you need to cause limb destruction or vital target damage. While many people in our style like to compete in tournaments, the vast majority of our training utilizes strikes and combinations that are not allowed in any tournamant I know of (legal that is!). I say this because people have certain expectations about martial art training. If your only goal in training is to win trophies, then you should seek out another art.
One may ask, why should children learn such an art? Well, children learn a modified, yet effective form of the adult curriculum. All students learn proper ethics regarding the use of martial skill as well.
Prices are the same as classes at the Centre - $84/8 week session ($42/month). This includes a one hour class + an additional and optional 45 min. workout/sparring class. Multiple members from the same family will receive a discount.
You can contact me for any other questions or more info on my art. I don't want to bog the site down with too much!

A search of Kenpo turned up some information. Do you have any one web site that you think reflects what is being taught locally ?

The word "Kenpo" is as generic as "karate", there are many styles. "American Kenpo" is the fighting style that is being taught here locally. I would like to refer you back to an earlier thread I posted here on the BBS, for further information on American Kenpo.
