Just curious. With the hot topic thread of guns killin' people and all it got me wanting to meet like-minded people who love to shoot. Honestly this sport really fascinates me. I am currently attending a school that will not only make me an excellent shooter, but will also help me in my profession.

I'd like to meet people (local) that also like to shoot long range precision rifles. I have access to a range that we can shoot out to 200 yards and with a little ingenuity, we could probably get 250-300 out of it. I really don't care if you have experience or are an expert marksman, we could still learn from each other, and I wouldn't have to go out to the range by myself 3 days a week like a do now.

In, any regards, if ya wanna hook up and shoot sometime, gimme a holler on the PMs or on this thread.

Suprisingly, I actually enjoy target practicing :) Even more suprising is that the most accurate rifle I've fired is a replica muzzle loader from the 1800s. This is out of modern rifles and an M1 WWI (maybe II?) rifle.

Weird.

M1 came about in 1936. The "Garand" was an excellent weapon for it's era. With a maximum effective range of around 400 meter (437 yards) it could really reach out and grab someone. And being chamber for the famous 30-06 and a muzzle velocity of 2800 fps, it made for an exceptionally accurate standard issue rifle. The down falls of this rifle? The 8 round magazine that would not allow of single bullet loading. It's generally heavy weight. ( around 9 lbs.) And the fact that when the weapon went empty the magazine auto ejected and made the infamous "ting" sound.

To fix the weight problem, the M1C was developed. Basically half the weight of an M1, smaller round (.30), less accurate and didn't punch out as far.

Wow.. I even managed to bore myself.. I need to find more hobbies..

All I know is that out of all the rifles that I used, firing at a target near the ground, the M1 left the biggest trench ;) It's a powerful rifle. I had to go digging to find the bullet. I don't recall if it was heavy but I do remember that it didn't kick so bad.

Yeah.. 30-06 does have a little bit of a shoulder punch. I'd give about anything to get my hands on one of the Garands.. (way to much for my budget right now.)

I do have a Remington 700 PSS chambered in .308. (issued to me) It has a Leupold Mark IV 4.5X14 scope and a nice swivel bi-pod. That sucker is capable of 1/2 MOA all day long. Besides that I have a Savage 10FP-LE2 chambered in .223. Has the Choate Varminter stock on it, crappy glass and a 20 inch barrel. I love that gun.. 100 yards my rounds touch.

My other guns include: Unfired, still in the box 1977 Colt Python, a Russian SKS (7.63X39), A Mossberg Auto Shotgun, a Winchester Model 70 in .243, a Glock 27 (.40) a few .22 me and my boys shoot. And a Hi-standard 9 shot .22 pistol. I have more, but I just can't think of them right now.

I don't mean to butt in but I thought that the SKS were illegal?? I just thought I would ask.

I'm not completely sure if it's a Garand or another model (or if there are other models) since I don't know much about them. But if you'd like, I can arrange for you to see it. Just send me a PM or something if you're interested (belongs to a family member). It looks like the picture at Wikipedia for the M1 Garand, though.

How "bout a free 200 yard target you can print on your printer.

Link Here and Print (http://www.gunnersden.com/index.htm.free-200-yard-bullseye-target.html)

Thanks Ponto.. I could use it.. maybe not for 200 yard. (Little to large bullseye for my tastes.) But it would be perfect for 250 and out!

Yeah thats it.. The M1 was the Garand and the M1C was the carbine version. I would DIE to shoot a Garand. Heck I'd be happy just holding it..

Where is this range at? I actually have a Remington 700 Varmint Special in .308. Stainless with the fluted barrel. Bought this gun in ‘94 to shoot groundhogs. We had a bunch. But my dad died and I never got around to shooting it. This gun has never been sighted in. It was also the same year the coyotes showed up. In ’95, there was not an active groundhog hole on our farm, my uncle’s farm or my grandmother’s farm. I used to shoot a lot but after dad died, I kinda got out of it. I was way too busy keeping up with the farm. But I do enjoy it. Do you reload? I used to be a heavy reloader when I shot. Mostly pistols. I still have all my stuff, just not sure if the powder and primers are still any good after 12 years. So let me know when you go shooting. I have to work the next two weekends. Heck, you can even come out to the farm and crack off a few rounds if you need a place to shoot. I could use the practice. I can’t hit crap anymore.

A few years ago, I had groundhogs in the stable. I spotted one and aimed the rifle out the front door. Probably a ridiculously easy 40-yard shot. Right when I squeezed the trigger, that sucker dropped and I shot through the stable. Kim definitely did not like me shooting out the front door either. I’ve since resurrected an old 22 magnum pump action Winchester that dad had. Not the most accurate gun, but for a short distance like that, it does the job. Without the damage if I miss. Though lately, I’ve used a 22 pistol to dispatch a lot of critters. Critters can eat a LOT of cat food in a hurry. And they are hard on the garden. I don’t like to hunt. Never did. Kroger’s is cheaper than hunting. More convenient too. But critters can do a lot of damage. Or scare the crap out of ya. Ever been backed up on your deck by a skunk at 4 AM in the morning?

Weapons are useful and fun,,strange conbination isn't it...lol. In my life so far I've shot several different types, the list consist of the M16, Colt .45 hand gun using the exploder and armor piercing rounds, Thompson .45, 50-cal machine gun, 12ga Savage pump using the puff firedragon rounds, AK-47, SKS, and the usual .25 and .22 cal rifles and hand guns.

My favorite ones are the Colt .45, 12-ga with the firedragons and the SKS. They are a kick to shoot.

I'm not a hunter either. Maybe the occasional quail or grouse (I don't see them in at Kroger's.) But I do love pest control. I love hunting ground hogs, prairie dogs, the occasional nasty opossum and definitely coyotes. But the ultimate thrill is puttin' 3 .308 holes in the size of a quarter on a yards 100 yards out.

TK I can PM you the information on the range if you'd like. ( I really can't discuss is in open forum.) But I'd really like to see that Varmiter.. Heavy barrel? How long is the barrel? Gots any glass on top that beauty?

I don't mean to butt in but I thought that the SKS were illegal?? I just thought I would ask.

The SKS is the semi Auto version of an AK-47/74. It is legal to buy and own.. Fun to shoot and cheap to shoot, but if ya want to hit a barn side at 50 yards I suggest a rock...

The M1C and M1D Garand rifles were special purpose or sniper rifles in specific configurations. They were full size weapons. The carbine version is the M1 carbine. It is a completely different design and is chambered for the .30 carbine caliber. Original surplus M1 Garand rifles are currently available to qualified shooters for around $500 from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. (www.odcmp.com) The last time I checked, they still had some original WW1 1903 rifles available as well for around $400. Shooting is part of our American heritage. It's a great sport.

If you just want to do some practice with the pistols, you are more than welcome to come out to the farm. I use low buck targets. Boxes, cans plastic bottles. Just remember to wear some ear plugs no matter where you go. So if you want to come out here, let me know. I’m just 2 miles south of the AA on #11. What caliber is the Glock? I never was too keen on those "plastic" guns. I like single action guns over the double action types. Though years ago, I shot a Glock that had a trigger job. That thing was nice. As close to a single action gun as you could get and still be DA.

Thanks tk, may take you up on that offer....as far as the glock, not sure but I think it's a 40...he likes them because they shoot underwater, and for a few other reasons...lol...I like skeet shooting myself....got to love them little clay birds...heehee 12 or 20 gage don't matter to me, like them both, the one kicks more than the other, but after a few shots, then to get your eye guiding right to where it needs to be. I love shot guns...

I never used a shotgun much. Since I don’t hunt, I guess that’s the reason why. Do you have one of those clay pigeon throwers? You could use that out here too if you want. I went shooting with a group last year. One brought a contraption that had a chair. You could load up to 3 clays in it. If you were that good. Those guys could bust two pretty regularly. And had some black powder rifles that were really accurate. I had a ball that day just watching them.

Just thought since we were talking about guns I would throw this out there. I inherited a 38 Smith & Wesson Special CTG from my step Dad. I've been trying to find out when the pistol was made and how much it's worth. I've tried emailing Smith & Wesson but, no answer. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks Tn2D
