You know all those emails people forward to you where a child does something really sweet? Well I have a little true story that happened while I was trying to get donations for the Humane Society at the Germantown Fair this week.
While we were sitting there all hot and frustrated, hoping to have someone stop by and give us some donations, this little boy was standing at one table just looking at the cat treats we had sitting out.
He asked us, "How much are these?" About that time I had a few people come up so I had to turn my attention to them and I just said quickly to him, "you give a donation and you can have some cat or dog treats." I turned and dealt with the people I had in front of me then. After I was finished with those wonderful people who gave us a great donation, I turned to look for him....he was already gone.
I started to feel bad thinking that I had ran him off without getting to talk to him. He was a beautiful little blonde fellow about 5 or 6 years old. Well, later on we were sitting there desperately fanning ourselves, with the little fans we got from this nice woman who was giving them out. I happened to look up and there he was, standing in front of the treat table again. So I smiled welcomingly and expained to him that in order to get a treat bag, you gave a donation. At the time I thought he would just put a few pennies in and I was going to give him all the treats he wanted. Well....this little boy handed me a $1.00 and told me that was his donation for the animals. IF THAT didn't make me feel sad/happy/and like the biggest jerk....I don't know what!! I said, forget the donation, let's get you signed up for the raffle, it's only a dollar.
So I wrote down his name and asked him what his phone number was. He didn't know it, so I told him to run to where his parents was and get his phone number so we could contact him in case he won anything. He ran back with a piece of paper with his number wrote on it, and we put it in one of the drawing boxes. I gave him all the treats and little toys his little arms could hold. He jogged happily off down the aisle. Later he came back and I got him to pick all the winners out of our raffle. He said to me, "Thank you even though I didn't win anything." MY GOD, I thought that little fellow was going to make me SOB!! He was SO sweet, precious, and gentle-hearted. here this little boy could have went and played some games, got some candy, or anything else...and what did he do??? He told me he had some cats and dogs and you could really tell that he was already an animal lover and wanted to help other animals. I wish I knew who he was, I can't even remember his name now. Whoever's child that is...I hope to GOD you know what a precious little guy you have!!!
That made up for all the sweat, heat, frustration, and people who just kept wanting free stuff for nothing!! I wouldn't have missed meeting that little boy for anything in the world!!
