Suspect Info: Sentenced to 40 years
Patrolman Hay was shot and killed while investigating a burglary at a Clyde’s grocery store on East 2nd St. The suspect fled the store through an air duct. He was later captured, convicted and sentenced to 40 years. The suspect served 22 years of the 40 year sentence before being paroled in 2002.
Patrolman Hay had been with the agency for 18 months and was survived by his parents and a Brother.
Crime fighting has taken its toll. Since the first recorded police death in 1792, there have been more than 17,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Currently, there are 17,535 names engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. A total of 1,635 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 53.5 hours or 163 per year. There were 155 law enforcement officers killed in 2005.
The week of May 15th is observed as National Police Memorial Week. It is a time when we honor our fallen men and women of law enforcement. It is also a time when we, as a grateful people, say thank you to these heroes for making the ultimate sacrifice.
Please join the Fraternal Order of Police Limestone Lodge 5, the Maysville Police Department and the City of Maysville as we honor our own hero Patrolman Danny Lee Hay who made the ultimate sacrifice on October 19, 1979. We will have the National Police Week Service on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at the Danny Hay Skate Park (Rain location- Chapel at the Maysville Cemetery.) at 10:00 A.M.
