The local chapter of the NAACP held it's 2nd Annual Gala/Fundraiser on April 29, 2006. The event consisted of several different performers and a delicious prime rib dinner. The keynote speaker was Hilary Shelton, President of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP. He spoke eloquently of service and social conscience. He also brought literature of the Civil Rights Federal Legislative Report Card in it our legialators ranked as follows:
United States Senate:
McConnell F (5%)-only voting for 1 out of 20 bills highlighted by the NAACP.
Bunning F (5%)-only voting for 1 out of 20 bills highlighted by the NAACP.
These bills were:
1. Protect Civil Rights cases from Class Action Lawsuit overhaul
2. Increase minimum wage
3. Ensuring continued Vocational & Technical education funding
4. Increase federal spending on health and education
5. Eliminate cuts in federal spending on Medicaid
6. Preserve the Community Development Block Grant Program
7. Restore federal education funding
8. Restore funding for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program
9. Passage of regressive federal budget
10. Confirmation of Priscilla Owen to federal bench
11. Confirmation of Janice Rogers Brown to federal bench
12. Confirmation of William Pryor to federal bench
13. The Central American Free Trade Agreement
14. Immunity from lawsuits for gun manfacturers, dealers and distributors
15. Confirmation of John Roberts to US Supreme Court
16. Increase funding for Low Income Heating Assistance
17. Increase Pell Grants
18. Increase federal spending on Head Start
19. Increase federal funding for AIDS drug assistance
20. Cutting federal funds for a variety of low-income programs
Someone may ask why do I care?? I'm not Black or Hispanic!! The answer is not in the color of your skin but your income level. Many of the above listed programs effect most of us working and low income families no matter what the color of our skin. The Senate does not vote on a bill for people of color the Senate votes on bills that have a very large impact on working and low income families most of which being people of color and people living in rural America. The difference as so strongly shown by this administration is not in the color of your skin but in the size of your bank account.
The Kentucky Representatives in the House did not fare well either:
Whitfield F (26%)
Lewis, Ron F (26%)
Northup F (22%)
Davis, Geoff F (22%)
Rogers, Harold F (22%)
Chandler F (65%) (The Lone Democrat)
