The next MLUG meeting - http://www.maysville-linux-users-group.org will be on Saturday, June 3, 2006 beginning at 12:00PM (noon). It will be in room AB318 at the Maysville Community & Technical College.

Again, there will be free linux distributions and several topics discussed, including:

Qemu - free, open source virtual machine able to run more operating systems than vmware or ms virtual whatever they call it this week (available for Linux, Mac, and oops, even Windows)

Continuation of the Apache + PHP + MySQL Series -

By the way, I am also teaching a beginning HTML, Advanced HTML, and a Apache/PHP/MySQL course at the maysville community & technical college community development center beginning next week (the html courses run 1 night a week for 4 weeks back-to-back (8 weeks total for both courses) and the php/mysql course runs 2 nights a week for 8 weeks after the html courses are completed.) Each course is from 6PM to 8PM - the html courses are on thursdays, the php/mysql/apache courses are tuesdays and thursdays from 6 - 8 PM. You should contact the college for more information. I believe registration for each of the courses is less than $100 each (although I am not certain, so call/inquire for more info)

More topics at your requests to be added to mlug meeting agenda.

Thanks.

installing the app

tor/privoxy

Will have a Inspiron9300 with Breezy installed, nic card and wireless card...

still can't get wireless to work in Linux with that top. But it hasn't been a hot issue either. Been back to xp for a while...

need to put in the seat time, and seat time is not handy now days.

Yes, depending on your video card - I have my home 64 bit ubuntu system using this with an nvidia card - great eye candy, its known as Xgl server + compiz - here is a howto on how to do it on your system - http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=148351&highlight=xgl+compiz Also see this thread - http://compiz.ed3n.com/

I will answer your other questions at the MLUG meeting or maybe in this thread when I get more time.

Also, http://www.ubuntuforums.org is a great place for information about how to do things if you need an answer quicker than I can get you one

Howto:

find apps

Click on the Menu system - first button on top left of gnome screen. There is also a search button there. If you mean more applications to install, see the post I made about Synaptic Package Manager. There is a button that says categories. Clicking it will list all available applications by common categories such as internet, office, multimedia, etc and their descriptions for each application will appear when you click on the application name within a category.

install apps

Easiest way is with synaptics, quickest way is using apt-get install 'package_name' where package_name is the name of the package you want to install.

use apps

Each application has a help file by clicking on the help drop down list when opened. There are also numerous tutorials available online by simply searching http://www.google.com for the specific application.

use linux systems to do common end user things

Elaborate and I can give examples

explain sudo... superuser do... need to eliminate that confusion

Linux has a super user known as root. The root user can do anything to a linux system, whereas as user can't. Because of this, it is unsafe to run linux logged in as the super user or root. An application known as sudo was created to run specific commands as the root user for normal user accounts that are authorized to do so. There is a way to bypass sudo entirely, however, I recommend new Linux users to not try to circumvent security measures that are in place to protect the end user from causing damage to their system. For instance, a root user can completely delete everything off the hard drive and linux will continue to work (for the most part) until you reboot. Because the root user deleted everything, there is no confirmation message such as those offered by windows (which I find rather annoying....if I delete an entire folder, I dont want to be asked for every document within in if I am sure.....)

example:
use apt get in ubuntu and put it in a desired location
referencing that location
installing the app

I would recommend to not install applications to different locations on the hard drive - this circumvents security built into the linux filesystem, where each mount point contains specific data with specific permissions.

tor/privoxy

For a single computer system or protecting an entire network??

Will have a Inspiron9300 with Breezy installed, nic card and wireless card...

still can't get wireless to work in Linux with that top. But it hasn't been a hot issue either. Been back to xp for a while...

Good expalanations there. You're right, we need to put more seat time in and do more googlin'.

Tor/pirvoxy is intended for the top with ubuntu. Got a handle on the xp versions. Will expand to network/server coverage in the future should the desire arise. The top is a inspiron with the internal radio and nic. Would like to hook it up in June and try configuring a few things with the group or somethin...

Thanks again for the input.

Meeting room has temporarily changed from room AB318 to T114 (in the technical building) due to renovations taking place in room AB318.

Meeting starts at noon and will end when:
A - They run me off (possible)
B - I cant find anything else linux related to talk about (not very likely)
C - I die from mass dehydration due to talking too much (possible)
D - 4PM rolls around and my stomach tells me its time to go home (most likely)

This was a very informative meeting Ed. Thanks for all of the good information. I especially look forward to trying Firewall Builder.

Thanks! The presentation files are available on the MLUG web site in the downloads section. I split it up into topics (LAMP - Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP and Firewall Builder). Available in several formats including - Adobe Acrobat PDF, OpenOffice version 1 (sxi) and 2 (odp)

Next meeting will be a Linux Installfest - planned in September (won't follow normal meeting dates of the first saturday of the month because that is a holiday weekend, I believe). However, I will get a confirmed date in September.

At an installfest, experienced Linux users help new to linux users get linux running on their computers. So, those who want can bring their entire computers (with keyboard, mouse, monitor and an ethernet cable if you have one). Or, you can just attend and watch.

I am going to have several different distributions of Linux available, including a version for very old hardware (like Pentium 1 and up). Any computer meeting these minimum specs will work - 66MHZ CPU, 32MB Memory, 2GB Available Hard drive space) Dual boot installation is available, however, if you plan on dual booting you just do a complete backup of critical files first (prior to meeting)

If anyone attending needs special circumstances (such as bringing laptops without a cdrom or floppy drive) please let me know ahead of time so I can make accommodations for your installlation.

I will make a formal announcement ASAP
