Robert Lyons/Daily Times Members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol inspect the vehicle identification number of a car at West End Auto in Portsmouth Wednesday afternoon. Officers from several agencies in Kentucky and Ohio were checking the cars to see if they had been reported stolen.
What started as an investigation into a stolen SUV lead to a large number of law officers from Kentucky and Ohio checking out cars at a Portsmouth car repair business.
It started around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning when detectives from the Scioto County Sheriff's Office, the Portsmouth Police Department and the Russell, Ky., Police Department were investigating an SUV stolen from Russell. They were talking to a suspect on Grant Street who told them where the truck was - West End Auto behind the floodwalls at Fourth and Madison streets.
Portsmouth detectives got a search warrant to look for stolen vehicles. By noon, there were about 30 officers from the Portsmouth Police, the Scioto County Sheriff's Office, the New Boston Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the FBI, Ashland, Ky., Police, Russell Police and the Kentucky State Police at the business tucked behind the floodwall on Madison Street.
“I hate to characterize it as a ‘chop shop,' however there were clear indications that motor vehicles had been stolen, taken there and were in the process of being cut up,” said Portsmouth Police Chief Charles Horner. He added that when officers arrived Wednesday morning, they found two men cutting up a vehicle to resell the parts.
“As a result of that search, we located two vehicles from Kentucky, one from Ironton, a trailer from Greenup County (and) a pickup truck from New Boston,” said Horner.
He added that police found a large amount of prescription drugs in the business office.
Officers spent much of the day checking vehicle identification numbers against lists of stolen cars.
Investigators went to other locations in the county including the residence of Ted Journey, West End Auto's owner.
Officers were working late into the evening and they expected the investigation to continue for at least another day because of the large number of cars on the West End Auto lot.
Horner couldn't say where the investigation would lead.
“Clearly, we are in the infant stage of the investigation,” he said. “Right now we are just following the leads as they develop.”
The names of those arrested were not available at press time.
