Letting go of something dear to the heart can be very hard to do, as Mason County School Board realized when it accepted a bid for Jones Elementary.

At Monday night's meeting board members discussed, in closed session, the offer of $80,000 for the building and parking lot. The bid was made by Jerry Lundergan.

After 45 minutes, the board announced the sale of the building. Board Chair Thomas Wise said the purchase prohibited the new owner from using the facility as a school. He also cleared up rumors about other offers, which were higher, on the property.

The article states that: Superintendent Tim Moore said accepting the offer was difficult, but something that had to be done.

"I think it was based on one true offer," Moore said. "The board looked at it and approved it. It is hard to get rid of things you hold dear."

Keeping the building, even though it was unused, cost the board nearly $10,000 a month, something that Moore said could not continue.

"You look at $10,000 to $12,000 a month in operating costs, you can't do that," Moore said. "You are taking a 10 percent loss each month."

No matter what happened on Forrest Ave. during the next ten months, 2 acres of land and a building of that size would not loose 100% of its value in 8 months and be worth 0 dollars.

We will follow the progress of this building and let time be the judge of our school boards attitude and expertise.

I can see where they may have had some high expenses during the cold weather, but there is no way a properly managed building would have cost that much during the spring and summer while it was put up for sale on the open market.

The more money the board got for the building, the more money we would have had for the children.

What has never been answered is, the plans Jerry Lundergan has for this building? I think the public has a right to know this also. After all, it has been there so many years, and so many parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, other family relatives and friends have seen so many children educated in that wonderful building by a great group of teachers and staff. Please try and find out what the plans are for this building?

I know a lot are wishing for the teen center and others are wishing an assistant living apartment complex for the elderly. Guess we will just have to wait and see what Jerry finally tells us.
