The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) has announced a local pandemic flu summit to be held in Maysville to address pandemic flu preparedness.
The summit will be held May 23, 2006 at Maysville Community College from 6-9 p.m.
In-state summits are designed to help public health and emergency response communities to inform and involve political, economic and community leadership in the state’s pandemic planning process.
“Pandemic planning needs to address how schools, businesses, public agencies, faith-based organizations and communities across the state participate in pandemic preparedness,” said William Hacker, M.D., commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health.
Kentucky held its statewide pandemic planning summit on Jan. 20, in Frankfort in response to President Bush’s plan to mobilize the nation to prepare for an influenza pandemic. Governor Ernie Fletcher and U.S. Department for Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary Alex Azar II signed a resolution committing the state and federal government to planning efforts addressing pandemic flu preparedness.
“Of all the many hazards we face, a pandemic has the unique potential to disrupt our lives, our health care system and our economy,” Governor Fletcher said. “Kentucky’s state emergency operations plan, combined with county and city emergency plans, provide Kentucky with a robust plan consistent and supportive of national efforts.”
According to the federal Department for Health and Human Services, pandemic flu is virulent flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Currently, there is no pandemic flu.
