Hi, Its been a long time since I've been on this board. My question is: My Norton antivirus is due to expire on March 9th. I have purchased the Norton Antivirus 2006. I need a simple instructions on installing it. There for awhile I'd get this warning that it was due to expire but now it hasn't shown up. When I purchased this antivirus the girl at the store told me when this warning pops up I should just click on it and go from there. But since it hasn't shown up in days and I'm getting close to the deadline I want to go ahead and replace it. My other question is how do I close all programs that are running? I have Windows 2000 Professional. Browser is Internet Explorer Version 6.0 I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you-----Alice

Hi Alice,

I'll tell ya what I would do.
1. Return Norton Antivirus.
2. Download AVG or another quality free virus scanner or use the online scanners like Trend Micro or Symantec and like provide at their sites
3. Remove the existing version from the hard drive.
4. Stop using Explorer and get a better browser like Firefox or some other

But that's just me. If you are broadband, a quality router will provide a secure hardware firewall that may be supplemented with a software firewall if the user feels it is necessary. But staying on top of free scans that are always updated is free and offers decent security if the user keeps a good eye on things.

But to answer your question, just stick the cd in and it should launch the installer. If it does not self start, go to my computer and click on the cd drive to get the cd spinnin. Find the .exe file and click on it. That will get it going. Should just be a series of next button clicks and a user agreement. It should replace the current installation but sometimes the old garbage files are left behind.

I use Avast, it is free and when I first got it, it found 6 virus on my laptop that Norton did not find. the link to download Avast is on the "downloads" link from the first page of the BBS

Ia-gal,
You might want to really think about this before you down load Norton 2006. I`ve used Notrons for years and never had a problem until now.Like you my Norton antivirus was due to expire this month.I downloaded my 2006 Norton online and it has slowed my computer down tremendously. I don`t know if something went wrong with the download or not. I`ve been in contact with Norton tech and we`ve tried this and we`ve tried that and nothing seems to be working. They said I could get a refund and that`s what I will probably do. Good Luck, Rick

LA Gal. If you haven't taken Nortons AV out of your package, you can return it to the store. I agree with others, download Avast AV, take out Nortons, and install Avast. There's no reason anymore to waste money on AVs. Nearly 99% of commerical software can be replaced with freeware, and I've been doing so for the past 4 years with far less problems.

Also yes, make 100% you have a firewall on your comnputer, even if your on dial-up. Since ZoneAlarm is free, there's no exchuse for not having at least a software firewall.

Good luck!
