I'm at my wit's end here.
For the last few months, I've been getting brownouts for lack of a better term on the cable. I have the T1 connection, and every once in awaile, I get errors, for example Avast is having trouble connecting to the internet. Or network connections have timed out. GAIM (my IM) at times will re-connect itself (which it's suppose too, in case of a disconnect.)
In the last few weeks, I can't send e-mail attachments, though Thunderbird. I can send normal e-mail, but when I try to send an attachment I get:
sending of message failed.
the message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smpt.maysvilleky.net failed. The server may be unavaialble, or is refusing STMP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or elsecontact your network administratior
This goes though smtp.maysvilleky.net
However, I can send the same stuff though gmail, or any other web-based e-mail service.
Now the last couple of days, I'm getting this though Firefox:
Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at maysvillekybbs.com.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
(does anyone know how to cut/paste error pages consistently?? Shee...)
Now the clincher: If I do a ipconfig /renew, it'll work for one or two web pages then it's back to the same thing. A /release, then /renew doesn't do much better. Nor does a power down, power up on the cable modem too. It also doesn't seem to be just HTTP, I've had problems updating programs as well. One thing I do notice, if you try to load a lot of pages on the web browser at once, 90% of the pages will give the same 'server not found' error. It's like it's running out of bandwidth or such.
I did a tracert and at TIMES I get the DNS address, sometimes something like 'xyz.com not found' - which indicates it's the DNS server somewhere (I'm thinking Maysville)
I've done a full spyware scan on the system with 8 different scanners. Although spybot caught some minor players, nothing helped. I did a virus scan too, no fun.
My stats are:
Firewall: Zonealarm (freeware) updated
anti-spyware: Spyware doctor, Spywareblaster, Spywareguard, Spy Sweeper, MS's ASW, Spybot, CWShredder and ad-aware
Anti-virus: Avast AV (updated automatically)
Windows 2000, 700 mhz machine, 384 megs memory.
One possible idea: Does anyone know if the cable is crushed - say if a piece of furniture is on it, or gets caught in a door, would that cause problems?
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
