The best free on that I know of is Avast. You can get it here, www.avast.com then click on "downloads" near the top, then click on "download programs" then select "Avast 4 FREE home edition".
I learned about this program from TCS.
I had Norton when I first got my laptop, I had to take into TCS just to get rid of it. They had to go into the registry to get it out. I was getting the same the error message that you are getting.
Sheesh, it was a pain in the butt!
This is what I was told just the other day, the more popular an anti virus is the more likely that hackers are exploiting it, because more people are using it.
We are so pleased with it, we are going to buy the pro version ASAP!!
Good luck Sassie Mama!

Avast Anti Virus Software is all we recommend for your PC. Foxy is just a TCS Satisfied customer. lol
There are other computer store in the area the do a fine job. Ed at RHP Studios (http://www.rhpstudios.com/)is the only other one I recommend because he supports the BBS and is a good friend.
I recommend you first download Avast by clicking here (http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe) Then call us, TCS @ 563-8010 for a free Home User license key. UN-install all Norton and Symantec Programs in your "Add and Remove Programs". You will find this in the "Control Panel". Then install Avast Anti-Virus Software with you free home user license key.

Kinda drastic, but when I formatted out my computer this week and reinstalled Norton SystemWorks, it reset my subscription. It was due next month but now it says it is not due until 1/3/07. Go figure.

I agree with everyone, Sassy: Go with Avast AV, and don't look back. Been using it for a year, no problems, and it catches lots of viruses. Nortons is good, but for it's price, it's just not worth it anymore. Open Source, or Freeware is the best way to go.
Oh...and TCS as well :)

only thing I can think to add to this is the dreadful, nortons uninstall didnt work syndrome (does it ever really work????) One way that does work every time, or when it gets botched, is here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606
the link above is for 2003 products or earlier - Im too lazy to look up the others, and I have posted these links in the past.
another good freeware antivirus only is http://www.clamwin.com - one feature I love about this is that it emails infected scan results to whatever email you specify and it does multiple daily updates. It is based on the open source clamav (which is what practically every bootable linux cd includes that ppl use to clean up windows infections that are hard to remove while in windows)
