Maysville Linux Users Group - http://www.maysville-linux-users-group.org
The MLUG is about to roll out the first of several online distance learning classrooms. These will be full online classrooms covering various topics. A new poll has been started to find out what our users would like to receive training in for future classes. I already have a few ideas from various areas of knowledge, and a few different classes are already in the initial stage of being put together, with a couple already completed. If you have any other suggestions, choose other in the poll and then post a message concerning the training you would like to receive.
Online Classrooms
I had been researching the Moodle distance learning software. I thought this would be an excellent way to provide extended learning capabilities to the MLUG users instead of the normal mini-howtos that are spread throughout the articles of this web site. At least one college instructor also felt this was excellent software, and even suggested I use this software in future classes at the local college.
I first used distance learning software while teaching the Linux Administration course through the Maysville Community & Technical College. Unfortunately, I did not have very good experience with the software they were using, nor did I like the fact that I had to use Windows programs to teach a linux class. These problems caused me to start researching alternative methods of teaching and then came the idea of offering classes to the MLUG.
These online classes would be very similar to those offered by other colleges. The classes will be broken down into content consisting of documentation or chapters, multimedia lectures, hands-on training, discussion groups, and quizzes to test your progress. At the completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Certificate of Completion
The MLUG is not a certified testing facility. We are not certified as a learning center or school of any type. What this means is that your certificate of completion is probably worthless if it is being used for a job application. This may not always be true, but at the moment it certainly is. Although the certificate would be considered useless, this doesnt mean that you will receive a certificate if you fail the course. Therefore, the online training that the MLUG offers will be held at the highest standards for online training. If you successfully complete the course, you will have obtained knowledge in that area of training.
The training we offer and the certificate you will receive could be used as a way to brush up on previous training, or as a way to get a head start in training you might want to take. You could theoretically use it to see if the classroom/major you want to take at a college will be something you would like to do in the long run (I have met many students with college credit and diploma's in job fields they do not currently use because they didnt like their choice of majors and was too late to change it). You could also take the course offered and then test out at a certified training center - such as those in Lexington or Cincinnati.
Anyone who has any additional questions or comments may make a post in our forums, start a discussion in the poll or the news announcement concerning the poll on our web site, or send me an email by clicking on the email icon within my user profile (ewiget) at the MLUG web site or RHP Studios here at the Maysvillekybbs web site.
