Hey all. How do you tell where a bogus E-mail is coming from? I’m getting E-mails that claim it is from Alltel and that my E-mail account has been suspended. To find out why, I have to click on a “zip” file. It’s not a zip, it’s an .eml file. The real Alltel says there is nothing wrong with my account. The reply address is: support@alltel. The real Alltel address is: alltel@custhelp.com I don’t like this crap. I’m just trying to figure out a way to stop it. So far, the wife hasn’t gotten one. It even has a message that says: Attachment: No Virus (Clean) I’m not sure anyone else uses Alltel on this board, but if you do, this message is bogus. Anyway to backtrack this sucker?

That's definately a phish, TK. Pure and simple. I've gotten several like that, though other companies. Some I don't even do business with, with the same bull; your account is suspended.

The crooks are looking for at least passwords to your accounts. Just ignore them, and keep spreading the news about any new ones you get. phishers can only do their scams, if people don't know they're scams.

Good post!

There are several free spam add-on tools for outhouse and outhouse express (if that is what you use for your email client).

One I can recommend based on personal linux use uses the powerful spamassassin - from the web site:

SpamAssassin for Outlook (SAO) is a free Outlook add-in designed to fight spam by enabling users to take advantage of the spam-fighting capabilities provided by SpamAssassin (http://spamassassin.org). The web site is http://sourceforge.net/projects/saoutlook/

Spamassassin is easy to configure, has a nice set of default rules, and can be customized for your own preferences. I have not personally used the outlook add-on, but use spamassassin on my personal linux computers (both workstations and servers)

You can also google for free spam filter whatever_client_you_use

There is another really good one that I have used on a lot of client computers in the past but for the life of me I cant remember what it is called at the moment.......I will post an update once my memory comes back.

Spam filtering software usually is able to filter about 90% + of all spam including phishing, depending on your configuration. I have a great tutorial on the MLUG web site about how to configure spamassassin for optimum filtering with low false positives.
