You might have attended the organizational meeting on Thursday night at the Hospice building or maybe read a story in the Saturday Ledger.

You might be interested to learn of another group in Maysville that is meeting every Sunday afternoon at the Herb Farm @ Strodes Run. Meetings start at 3 pm.

The planned facility is a no kill, limited access facility that is being built on 1.5 acres of land donated by Mason County's first Certified Organic Farm.

The Herb Farm has served as a rescue and/or foster home for dogs, cats, horses, pigs and goats since 1999.

The goals of the group are to provide education, community outreach and homes for adoptable pets. It is the groups feeling that alot of good animals are put down or abandoned by their owners for no reason other than a change of circumstances.

By sharing information and offering options to pet owners and others, the animals can find a new home. All people involved are volunteers and 100% all funds collected go to the animal's welfare.

A network of foster homes is being set up and a web site is under construction to help in the placement of these animals. Hopefully others in the local media will join in and help with this effort.

If you are interested in being a part of this program, contact the farm at 606-742-2000 or email HerbFarm@StrodesRun.com or send a private message to Ponto on the BBS.

Also, if you have a business that is interested in participating by putting a flyer in your window, or can help in any way, please let the group know of your interest.

As the group grows, the BBS will keep you informed of the newest sponsors.

With the help of the community, local businesses and people like you, Maysville will have a new reception area and kennel to serve the educational and placement needs of the community.

If you are interested in our inspiration and mentor, visit............. Serenity Rock H.S. (http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OH526.html)

As a group we feel there are needs we can meet immediately.

Just to make sure nobody gets confused. The humane society meeting I talk about that had it's meeting Thursday night is a NO KILL organization. The official name has not been decided on yet, so we just say Humane Society until the time that a name is decided upon.

There should be no confusion, as both groups want the same thing. It is just that some are ready to start working now.

The Strodes Run Adoption Center will not use the name "humane society".................

The facility will be located on land donated by the farm, but run as an independent organization on the oposite side of Strodes Run Road.

hope this helps.............................

I think all those involved, would fully support both groups.................

Thanks for the post, guys. It's nice to know there's at least one no-kill shelter around. 2 is even better.

I've always advocated getting your dog, cat or other companion from a shelter. My biggest problem is, I can't go to a kill shelter, for I know I'd want to take them ALL home, and I can't do that. At least a no-kill one, they will live in peace and hopefully go to a good home someday.

Still would be hard for me to go into even a no-kill. All those pretty faces asking me to take 'em home.

Ok, so I'm a sucker for a pretty face, sue me :)

Thanks for all the emails........

One thing that did come up in conversation, is the fact that at the the Strodes Run facility has much smaller goals and ambitions than the group that met at Hospice on Thursday.

They are not so much concerned with the local animal shelter, local government, non profit status and all the things brought up at the meeting.

Also, because of the rural area, larger animals can be accommodated, not just dogs, cats and pocket pets.

It is more of a grass roots clearing house for people to people exchange of pets, an educational, informational outreach and self help training center.

The farm has already placed a seizure alert dog (http://www.epilepsy.com/articles/ar_1084289240.html) and is interested in using their mini donkeys, horses and mules for hippotherapy. (http://www.americanhippotherapyassociation.org/aha_hpot.htm)
